He made a ham radio as a kid (complete with capacitors, transformers, resistors). As a grown up it was his passion to try to win ham radio awards. Apparently there's an award you get if you contact another amateur ham radio operator in each of the seven continents, and he got one for using the satellite kind of radio too (forget what it's called...). He cut down all the trees in his yard to do it.
He won another award for being the first person in n.america to contact a certain type of satellite sent up by Russia.
He tried to get into the Guinness book of world records (twice) by running a marathon and contacting different nations. (and got rejected, twice).
