Arthur had been awake for hours, loaded die in hand, constantly reassuring himself that this was not a dream. It wasn’t anyone else’s dream, it wasn’t his own.
This was real.
The morning light streamed in through the cracks in the blinds in Arthur’s hotel room, illuminating the dust swirling through the air.
In the golden light, Eames, fast asleep next to him, looked like something out of a dream. Or at least he would if he wasn’t snoring with his mouth wide open.
Arthur smiled to himself, lightly running a long, thin finger over the contours of Eames’ arm, and up to his jaw, his soft lips.
“What are you doing?”
Arthur froze as Eames’ eyes snapped open. Quickly, he withdrew his hand.
“A hair. In your mouth. I didn’t think you’d appreciate waking up choking.”
Eames sat up, shrugging. “Makes for an eventful start to the day. Look, thanks for sharing the bed, I can’t believe Mal forgot to book an extra room.” Scowling he stood, stretching, and Arthur watched his bare back as his spine cracked.
“Yeah. Not a problem, Eames.”
And Eames smiled, that wonderful cheeky grin of his that Arthur adored so much, even though it was never usually meant for him.
“See you downstairs.”
Arthur watched him saunter off to the bathroom and sighed, head crashing back into the pillows.
Eames was so obtuse. He’d always heard that unrequited love was the worst; now he knew it was true. The constant ache inside was almost too much to bear, and sharing a bed with him- he hadn’t been able to sleep, terrified he might do something dreadful in his sleep, and loose Eames as a friend forever.
Being friends was so difficult when you wanted more than friendship.
The room door opened, and Mal slipped in. Seeing Arthur alone in bed, staring blankly at the blinds opposite, she sighed.
“I’m sorry, Arthur. I tried.”
“It’s alright Mal. It’s just not meant to be.”
Arthur was used to not getting things that he wanted. Why should he think Eames would be an exception?
