Will could scarcely believe it. It really was just his luck. Just his rotten luck. Of course as soon as he discovers he was never really cursed, Jem proposes to Tessa. His Tessa.
The very thought of her sends him into a dizzy haze, and he has to sharply scold himself for even thinking that another visit to the opium den could be in order. But Tessa; her eyes like the sky above a stormy sea, her pale skin, her dark curls falling around her face when they kissed on the balcony at Lightwood’s ball…
When he thought about it, that kiss, it was as if was happening all over again. He could feel his lips tingle where she had pressed her own against them, and a sharp sting where she had lightly bitten him. Even though they had been under the influence of the warlock drink, he would have wanted to kiss her anyway. She was so beautiful; the way she had looked at him with those round doe eyes of hers when he had pulled the pearl clips from her hair, one by one. He was never going to forget her face in that moment.
He couldn’t believe she had said yes to Jem. How could she not have known how much he had loved her, had always loved her? Since the moment he had rescued her from the dark sisters he had felt honour bound to protect her. But now he felt something different.
Pain.
He had imagined that, since he had left his family at age twelve, he would be used to pain by now. But this was different. He had always been the one to hurt people, to push them away. He had been rude and sarcastic and mean. If any of that made him hurt too, it was to his own credit. But this... Tessa had done this to him. Unwillingly, he had fallen for her, not caring that she was a downworlder, not caring that she could possibly live forever and he would die. But now his hope had been slashed. Jem had gotten in first, had gotten her.
His Tessa.
It still seemed like a dream, like he would wake up and Tessa would be back in his arms, holding him tightly. It was so unlike Jem to do this to him, to fall in love and mention nothing. He didn’t think he had ever heard Jem even mention that he thought Tessa beautiful. He was particularly kind to her; but then, James was kind to everyone, even to him.
He didn’t deserve it. Just for asking Tessa to choose him over her betrothed, he knew he deserved neither her love, or his.
Will had thought that fixing the curse was the answer. But being free of it had just made everything so much worse. Now he could feel; but he’d never felt more alone.
