Name: Raina Yoshizawa
Age: 17
Birthday: February 2nd
Grade Average: B+
History: Raina enjoyed the comfort of a upper-class nuclear family for the first two years of her life. Things fell apart when her mother, Tamika Komatsu, discovered that Raina’s father, Fuyuki Yoshizawa, had another 2 year old daughter hidden away. Fuyuki moved across town into a modest home after Tamika won their home and majority of their assets in the court battle. Tamika’s mother moved in to help raise Raina and increase the family status in the community. Raina spent every other weekend with her father, getting to know her half sister. When Raina was seven, her father added another child to the household, her half brother. Neither parent ended up remarrying.
Raina spent her early life being used by both parents against each other. If Fuyuki found out Tamika wanted Raina to go to a charity dinner he would take the three children to the playground and let them play until they were scratched up and sweaty. Tamika and her mother would always make snide comments about Fuyuki and his other two children when Raina was in hearing range.
Growing up in two households that were constantly fighting with each other, Raina retreated further into her shell. She got along well enough with her half sister and brother but found it hard to open up to other children her own age. Her teachers in elementary school and junior high kept commenting to Raina’s parents how uncertain Raina seemed to be about herself and how living away from home for a few years might help to give her some more self confidence. Tamika and Fuyuki found the boarding school and agreed on it based on the wide variety of students that would be attending. Tamika wanted to pay extra to get Raina a private room but Fuyuki and Raina’s grandmother overrode the decision.
Because she spent so much time on her own, Raina liked playing around with different kinds of art. When she entered junior high, she also started to write poetry and short stories and once she entered high school, she got interested in photography. She has a large collection of books, some approved and some that aren’t. She tends to lean towards books that are based on imagery or coming-of-age stories.
Raina’s main problems revolve around her uncertainty about herself. The influence from the two sides of her family have overshadowed any kind of individual esteem. Raina has always viewed herself in terms of what other people need her to be, becoming somewhat of a chameleon without any basis to revert back to.
Appearance: Raina is about 5'3' with reddish-brown hair and brown eyes. She doesn’t slouch often as her mother and grandmother wouldn’t tolerate it. When she’s not in school, Raina usually wears skirts, slacks, and nice shirts. She has a few pairs of jeans and some t-shirts from her father but doesn’t usually wear them. Raina doesn’t smile much, and when she does it’s usually just out of politeness, not with any real joy.
Personality INCLUDING three strengths and weaknesses: The biggest thing about Raina’s personality is that she’s very introverted and quiet. She’s more comfortable talking to adults because of the parties and dinners her mother and grandmother host. She doesn’t have anything against talking to her classmates, she just doesn’t have enough of a sense of herself in order to forge many close bonds. Raina is pretty intelligent but because she’s so unsure of herself and so quiet, she doesn’t ask questions when she doesn’t understand something and doesn’t volunteer any answers without being prompted. She also takes a long time to make up her mind, weighing the possible outcomes and trying to predict how it could effect her in the long run.
Strengths: 1. Intelligence-she’s capable of thinking things through rationally without jumping into any situations.
2. Adaptability-because of the different lifestyles her parents lead, Raina is able to assess what kind of personality would be most effective in dealing with people. It’s not overly effective when dealing with her classmates but helps her out when talking to adults.
3. Detail oriented-she’s used to noticing the small details. It’s partially from her love of art and partially because she had to spend so much time sitting in chairs listening to adults talk that she started to take in everything in the room around her as a way to entertain herself.
Weakness: 1. Introverted-Raina doesn’t have many strong connections with her classmates because she’s so quiet.
2. Overly cautious-It takes Raina a long time to make a decision because she ends up weighing so many factors.
3. Lack of self discovery-Raina’s biggest problem is that she doesn’t know herself yet. The boarding school is the first time she’s been away from her family for an extended period of time.
Overnight Bag: a few changes of clothes, her mp3 player, a stuffed koala bear, some raspberry tootsie roll pops, a worn copy of White Oleander, her camera, a bottle of gardenia perfume, some tampons, purple gel pens and her poetry notebook.
Father - Fuyuki Yoshizawa is a writer for a local newspaper. He’s at the head of his department and even thought the pay isn’t great, he has to put in long hours at the office. Raina is his oldest daughter with two half siblings following her. He owns a modest two bedroom house where Raina’s half brother lives full time and where Raina and her half sister spend weekends and some vacations. He’s a kind man but often distracted and enjoys the company of women, jumping from one relationship to another. He doesn’t approve of the upper-class lifestyle Tamika and her mother have chosen to raise Raina in but was unable to get a more equal division of custody.
Mother - Tamika Komatsu(reverted back to her maiden name after the divorce) has always enjoyed the upper class lifestyle. Her father owned a line of pharmacies and her mother spent most of her time doing charity work. She married Fuyuki because she was attracted to his carefree lifestyle but divorced him after finding out about his numerous affairs and one other child. Tamika is much like her mother, only working on charity committees and living off of her inheritance. She’s very proper, very strict, but still cares deeply for her daughter. She wants Raina to carry on in the tradition of the women in the family by growing up refined and charity oriented.
Grandmother - Hatomi Komatsu came to live in the manor house with Tamika and Raina after the divorce. She’s even more formal than Tamika but is willing to admit when something isn’t working and is willing to adapt. Hatomi also refuses to use money as a cushion and expects people to grow and develop before inheriting anything. She doesn’t approve of the way Tamika raises Raina but wouldn’t interfere until Tamika tried to put Raina in a private room at the boarding school.
Half Sister - Naomi Yoshizawa is only about four months younger than Raina. She’s a bit of a tomboy and very outgoing, always trying to get Raina to open up. The two girls don’t see each other much, mostly because Raina is only at her father’s every other weekend and Naomi is there whenever her mother needs a babysitter. Raina doesn’t like spending much time with Naomi because her sister is so self assured and popular at her school but deals with it because they don’t spend much time together.
Half Brother - Youji Yoshizawa is the only one of Fuyuki’s children that lives with him full time. Youji’s mother took off less than a year after Youji was born. He’s an aggressive child, demanding most of his father’s time and attention. Raina dislikes Youji more than she dislikes Naomi because of an incident with him beheading her toy horses when he was 3.
Extra-Curricular Activities: Photography club and Writing club.
Raina doodles on her spare time but doesn't like showing the drawings to anyone else. She also likes playing tycoon games on her laptop. She's beat mall tycoon and rollercoaster tycoon but her favorite is zoo tycoon.
Classroom Behaviour: “Raina is a pleasure to have in class, she’s very quiet and polite and turns in her assignments on time but I am concerned about her introverted nature. I am hopeful that living in close quarters with other students will help her to develop some closer friendships with other students.”
Classroom Clique: She’s pretty much a loner.
Any Memorable Moments:
Friends and Enemies: She’d probably have a hard time getting along with the delinquent types because of her upbringing. I’d like to see her with one or two closer friends, it would probably help if they had a hobby or two they shared because Raina has trouble talking about herself. But yeah, I’m pretty much open to anything.
Miyuki Ishida: Raina felt comfortable with Miyuki right away because the girl didn't demand much from her in terms of a friendship. She understood Raina's uneasiness with people and didn't try to push her. While not best friends, Raina like spending time with Miyuki and has fun with her.
Sayuri Ono: Raina and Sayuri get along in a "wallflowers" kind of way. They kind of bonded together because neither felt comfortable talking to the more extroverted members of their class.
Itsuo Tateno: Raina's math tutor. She has quite a bit of respect for him because he never makes her feel stupid when she doesn't understand things.
Seikou Ishida: Raina knows him through Miyuki and Sayuri. She doesn't talk to boys very often so she wasn't comfortable with him at first but the more he was around, the more she grew to like and respect him. They aren't overly close but she doesn't have any problems with him.
Acacia Meridian: He's in the photography club with her but whenever he tries to talk to Raina or ask her a question she tends to blush, stammer, and ends up trying to back away. He doesn't understand why she acts like she doesn't like him. Raina really doesn't have a problem with him but she's not comfortable enough with him to try and form any bonds.
Hideaki Yuasa: They don't get along. He's a bully and Raina doesn't have enough confidence to stand up for herself, nor is she close with anyone assertive enough to stick up for her. He tends to find her in a situation where she's in a place she considered to be safe. He spilled a bottle of ink on some of her photographs and started laughing when she cried. He also stopped into her writing club meeting once and started reading some of her diary pieces to the class. Most of his attacks on Raina involve him trying to make her startle and make some noise, screaming in her ear or jumping out at her. Raina tries to avoid him at all cost.
Raiden Shindou: They were science lab partners for a semester and struggled through the labs, not because they weren't bright but because they didn't talk to each other much. During some of their brief conversations, Raiden realized that Raina was pretty strong in history, a subject that he was having trouble with. She agreed to help him out before their tests and quizzes. During the time they spent together, she found herself feeling stronger towards him even though she wasn't sure why. Raiden is her first crush even though he doesn't know. She started taking advantage of the school's pool for a chance to see him more often. She tends to blush whenever he looks at her.
