Mothman Saga - Days One and Two

Day One, Friday the 19th
Drove from PA to OH. Came down the usual way: Interstates 83 to 695 to 70 to 68 to 79. From there, I jumped onto US 50 through Clarksburg over to Parkersburg. Crossed over into OH, took Rt 50 to Rt 7. Left at noon got in around 1830 hours. Not bad. Four states in six and a half hours. The computer system was down at the hotel - they had record of my reservation but couldn't do a thing about it. Luckily, I was able to get into a room without much trouble. I spent the evening there trying to recover from all the driving. I only stopped once - to get gas and to take a leak.

Day Two, Saturday, the 20th
My legs hurt. Yes, I walk on the treadmill at the gym. But not carrying my purse or the fifty tons of books that I just purchased at the Mothman Festival. I am now at the Holiday Inn, resting, and reading. I got to meet Nick Redfern as well as talk to Rosemary Ellen Guilley. Both signed books for me. Took in the River Museum and the Tu-Endie-Wei Park that are about a half mile from the festival. I walked all of it, as parking spots are nigh impossible to find in such a small town. Took loads of pictures. Oh and toured the Mansion House at the park. Spent a lot of money but I have books to read for the rest of the year (though I'm almost finished with the one by Mrs Guilley about John Zaffis). Photos pending.

The Mothman Festival is held on a couple of closed off streets in the center of town. There is a statue of the creature that is viewable year round. A lot of vendors set up around the area - some are from the area, some are not. There were people from all over. One of these days, I should set up here. I toured the Mothman Museum which is in a new location, is larger, and seems to hold more information. It was really neat. Got a ton of crap there. Love this stuff. I bought books and t-shirts like crazy.

The River Museum is neat. It chronicles the history of life on and in the rivers surrounding the town. There is an aquarium in the place that has native wildlife in it. I took a lot of pictures of the model sternwheelers that were on display.

Since I was down that way, I walked over to the Tu-Endie-Wei Park. This is a site of a battle between the Mingo and Logan tribes and the white settlers. Got pictures. Tu-Endie-Wei means where the two waters meet - or something like that. This is the point of land where the Kanawha and Ohio rivers intersect. Also on the park grounds is the Mansion House - originally built as a tavern, it was later remodeled into a house. The thing is all hewn logs, looks like it might have three rooms in it, but actually has three floors and a basement. I walked the grounds a bit, taking photos of the rivers and shipping. By the time I went through the house, I was wore out.

I staggered back to the car and drove down Rt 2 to Barboursville, got my hotel room and some snacks, then crashed. I've been reading since then.

Dinner has arrived so I'll close here.

wv, point pleasant, oh, tu-endie-wei, mothman festival, vacation
