Well, it's obvious that I am definitely my father's daughter. When Dad worked evenings, he would often encounter stranded motorists and offer his assistance during the night. Today, I had my turn. The roads were a bit slick - not too bad but you did need to be cognizant of the turns and intersections. As I was coming up the hill on Rt 216 and made the big turn at the bottom of the hill, I saw a Chevy Cobalt across the road, in the ditch with a woman outside the car. Yeah, I stopped. I helped her tell 911 (rescue) where she was - she was driving this road for the first time, I gave her my hat and scarf since all she had on was her uniform and a light sweat-jacket/hoodie (I didn't have any gloves to spare - I only have one set myself!), and kept her company while she waited for the police and rescue. Poor lady. She said that, as she came around the corner, a small, silver car was in her lane. She swerved to her right to avoid the moron, she clipped one tree, nailed another and then ended up across the road in the oncoming lane. She said that the car wouldn't go into any gear so she couldn't get it out of the ditch. The whole passenger side was damaged. The mirror was forced in through the passenger side window so glass was everywhere and the rear-view mirror was bent. I think she got bounced around quite a bit and maybe hit her head on the mirror. I recommended she go to the hospital to get checked out. When I first noticed the accident, a car was in front of me. It just drove on. Didn't even slow down really. Later, another vehicle came by and didn't stop either. I often wonder if it was due to the lady being African American since I DO live in Pennsyltucky (to borrow
Catarzyna's term). (This area of PA is VERY racist!) Anyway, a third vehicle came by and the driver called out that there was a cop on his way. That was nice of him to tell us that. When the cop showed up, I left since he didn't want my vehicle to be in the way. He was about as cordial and polite as a revving chainsaw. What an ass. Yeah, you're working a holiday. Suck it up, dickweed. So were WE (the lady and I - she at McDonald's). When he pulled up, all he did was put on his rollers (the lights on the car) and light flares. He didn't even come up to see if the woman was ok! Bastard. Well, before I left, I gave the woman a hug. Day One of the 2010 and I've already up held one of my resolutions: to be more charitable. I feel so sorry for the lady. I wish I could have done more. I hated to leave her there with that dickhead cop. You know, when I worked at the sign shop, we did lettering on cop cars. Most of the guys were pretty cool. And ALL the cops I met when mom was killed were more than super awesome to me. I don't know what this jerks problem was.
Sigh.
I hope she'll be okay.
I could tell you about the shit I went through at work tonight, but who cares. Yeah, the first two hours sucked monkey nuts but at least my car isn't totaled, I'm not hurt, I'm not cold, and I don't have to worry about any medical bills that I can't afford.
I wish I could have done more.
