Hi after neglecting my journal for months at a time. ._.
I'll start with one of my favourite topics. :P
My cosplay list this year is basically SIMON FLOOD -- cosplaying as pre-timeskip ... him ... has kind of opened the gates to "well, if apparently I can pull him off well (note: I am skeptical about this myself, as I haven't seen more than about two pictures of me as him that I actually kind of like), maybe I can do this costume and this one and this one..."
To give whoever might be reading an idea of what I mean:
TORONTO ISLAND COSPLAY PICNIC - JULY 10th/11th - TORONTO, ONTARIO
- Probably my pre-timeskip Simon (which is really only a v. 2.0), since I don't have any "nice pictures" of it. Though rest assured that the GL photoshoot at Anime North was pretty amazing. Actually, I'll probably make a separate post about that later, when I'm less lazy and hungry. But I'll likely have made a couple of important improvements on it by then.
- If I can fit it in, I've also about half-finished the costume from the "Character Song" CD cover. You can only really see an orange hoodie with a yellow skull on the side, and a pair of brown, silver and pink(...) headphones, so about half of it will have to be designed by me, I guess.
OTAKON - JULY 30th - AUGUST 1st - BALTIMORE, MARYLAND
- If I can possibly make it to this con, haha... well, one costume I'm really excited to make is Simon's uniform from Parallel Works 2.1, "The sense of Wonder". I've got to start on it soon, since I have a bad feeling it'll frustrate me more than you'd think at first glance, especially that collar and those boots.
- Double K Simon. Awkward Hooker Simon. Again, another costume that'll probably drive me more crazy than I'd think or hope, especially if stretch vinyl enters into it, which it might. >_> But this is really only a maybe depending on whether Captain Osaka can show up at the con after all.
- Almost-entirely-new pre-timeskip, though I really only want v. 3.0 to be finished by Anime North 2011.
OTAKUTHON - AUGUST 13th - 15th - MONTRÉAL, QUÉBEC
- I'll be spending my birthday in a city I've managed to never visit before, haha. :D I'll likely be debuting another music video costume here -- the brown suit from "S.t.a.r.S.", complete with guitar (since I figure that without it, I will be both hardly recognizable and kind of limited as far as my poses go).
- "The sense of Wonder" will probably make another appearance.
- "Character Song" might likewise make another appearance.
FANEXPO - AUGUST 27th - 29th - TORONTO, ONTARIO
- I'm definitely pulling out Double K Simon for this, since we've actually got a group. :D YEAAAHHHHH
- "S.t.a.r.S." again.
- Something of a surprise (...well, I've told a few people about the idea...) that I -might- even be entering in the Masquerade.
NEW YORK ANIME FESTIVAL - OCTOBER 8th - 10th - NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK
- "S.t.a.r.S" once more, probably! I like suits. :)
- "The sense of Wonder" again.
- Should I host a TVTropes panel dressed as Kamina? I could enter the room by way of Dynamic Entry and ask, "DID SOMEBODY ORDER A... LARGE HAM?", so I am seriously considering this.
- I am also seriously considering entering the LARP as pre-timeskip Simon. Yes, I know, this would make me the kind of nerd that even most cosplayers look down on and snicker "what a nerd". ._. Though to be fair, I have a couple of friends that LARP, and for whatever it's worth they're all well-adjusted, stable, sane individuals who don't think they are their characters, or wish they were.
To be doubly fair, cosplaying also involves spending lots of time, money and effort on elaborate costumes and props, and "acting" in the sense of posing in-character for pictures (and performing in the Masquerade... and doing a little roleplaying in Cosplay Chess and events like that), so I'm really not sure where the huge leap from one to the other lies.
...After all that, and tangent aside, I've got Youmacon later in October, and D-TAC in December, but I'm not sure what I'll be doing for those at this point. ):
Not only all that, but I've wanted to make Lagann since Anime North 2009 -- so over a year now. Chances are I'll be stocking up on cardboard, expanding foam, Ureshell and automotive paints over the next few months. I should get to work on him pretty quickly, too, since warmer weather would be more conducive to my working on him outdoors. Indoors... well, all the, uh, carcinogenic adhesives and resins wouldn't be the greatest things to be floating around the house. >_> Which reminds me, I should also stock up on respirators, gloves and protective clothing...
The other benefit of working on him either in the garage or outside stems from that he's going to be HUGE. I want to actually make him proportionate to me, and it looks in most references as though he's as tall as Simon is (well, from the giant shoulder-things down). This wouldn't be so much of a problem if I were actually that small a person, but I'm 165 cm or so, so that's what the final product has to be too... and Lagann isn't exactly narrow since he has kind of giant arms. If I started working on him anywhere BUT at least on the lower level of the house, it'd be difficult if not impossible to move him.
I'm not really sure yet on a lot of the details, since chances are that I'll just kind of learn as I go, while I'm messing things up and stuff. Basically all the mecha costume tutorials I see online are for humanoid robots, so I'm going to have to go it alone a little. Though at least I have ideas, and cardboard is cheap to experiment with. The way I'd like to have it is making it look like I'm sitting in the mecha and it's moving under its own power. But I think I have a plan as far as pulling the illusion off... probably?
If all goes well, expect to see Lagann at Anime North 2011. My pants will be a robot. I will be hard to miss.
