Ernie part deux

Have a horrible backache from all the T'day work (the counters need to be 6" higher) and took the hottest shower I could stand. Phineas started talking to me in the shower, and reminded me of a "hook" paragraph I'd written 30 years ago while I was in college. I'd never been able to go beyond it, but he showed me how to connect it to the current story.

Chapter ###

Their case was hopeless from the start. We had them out-manned, out-gunned, and out-maneuvered. The only problem was: they didn't know it.

It had started as a friendly little war - no nukes (so far). We'd have running battles around the school buses, random tripping incidents in the hallways, lockers glued shut - the usual.

[Later, an explication of the first paragraph - (woodsball-ronin, I made need to tap your specialized knowledge base here) Out-manned: Ernie and I against the Henderson triplets, three blocks over (okay, they were three boys, but we had three years on them). Out-gunned: I'd found a silicone mold that made ice spheres (Mom wondered why we wanted so much kool-aid in winter) and the deep freezer was now stocked with thousands of rounds of ammo. Out-maneuvered: We all had bikes, but I had a valve-stem remover.]

I've now learned more about Ernestine & Phineas. They're children, probably 12-14, and Ernestine probably won't die at the end, but may end up in the hospital, or merely badly bruised. I scent familial/parental repercussions once the nature of the ammo is discovered by the other side.
