I never thought I would get into oil painting. I always thought it would be too messy, too hard, too much hassle, too toxic and a gaggle of other excuses. Well, one can't very well go through an art program without learning how to paint in oils now can they? So, this summer I'm taking my very first painting class.
Oil definitely behaves differently from acrylics. There are some pluses to painting in oil and some minuses as well. (Okay, the negative aspects are more due to the fact that I am used to paint that dries a lot quicker). I need softer brushes so that I stop stirring up the paint underneath. I keep poking my fingers into the wet areas. Still, I love the blendability of oils. I love the feeling of the brush gliding across wet paint. The bottom line is that I'm truly enjoying it.
Now all I have to do is paint more and paint faster.
My other class for this summer is life drawing. This is a class that I have been wanting to take for a good long while now. I've always been interested in drawing the human figure. We get to spend three and a half hours with the model doing various short and long poses. I wish we could have them there for longer. Figure painting in oil would be really nice although that isn't the point of the class.
Other than the fact that I am SO tired from my extra long days, I'm really enjoying myself. It will be a good summer.
