camelot_drabble The waiting was interminable.
Gwen bit back a groan of frustration. How much longer could it possibly be? Were it up to her, this would long since have been over and done with. Arthur said it would be better this way, but she was starting to doubt his assurances. Knowing something so amazing lay ahead, whilst she was made to bear all of this... she would never make it. She would never survive.
"Not much longer," he murmured to her, with a half-smile. All she could do was glare at him.
More minutes slid away, and Gwen was finding it difficult to keep from complaining. Finally, Arthur laid his hand on her leg. "There."
The kitchen servants were bringing out an enormous cake-- Gwen's favorite treat. The last of the three dozen visiting nobles had finally taken their seats, after being presented one at a time to the king and queen. Gwen, who had ordered the cake in the first place, had planned to have it served before they began the formalities, but Arthur had a different idea.
Her eyes drifted shut as she took the first bite. "Was I right?" Arthur asked quietly.
Now, she could not hold back her groan as she nodded, although this one was delighted.
Nothing had ever tasted so good.
