He finishes patting down the last pile of earth and wipes his forehead with his arm. He has no crosses; but the markers are there in his vision; immovable. Names, he thinks numbly, I have only their names.
Richard looks at his splattered sleeves; mud on white.
Jacob never told him it would be this hard.
Have you had enough?
He raises his head, sights a sail on the horizon: wanderers drawn to his hidden light, soldiers for his cause.
“Not yet,” he mutters.
It was time to set up his pieces again.
