"The thermodynamic field would be something like the surface of a pond in a heavy rainstorm:
an incoherent mess of tiny interactions, with no noticeable pattern,
in either temporal direction.
In order to explain why our universe is not like this, what needs to be explained is the existence of such things
as stars and galaxies, for they provide the electromagnetic equivalent of giant rocks (or otters!)"
-excerpt from Times Arrow and Archimedes Point by Huw Price
A cosmic void blank with nothingness
One single point of utter brilliance sparks into life
this spark pushes through the plane
a cosmic otter made of stardust crashes to the 'surface'
the void ripples outward
where each wave crests a sun bursts into being
burning bright and casting light against the shadow
these ripples glow in fiery rings ever expanding outward
for every peak a valley lies low where the light winks out again
that is the symmetry of all things, but the otter doesn't notice
the otter grabs a rock from its shoulder pouch and splashes it in the inky void
where the stone strikes the surface whole galaxies swirl away like glowing jellyfish in the void
they flare out as quickly as they are born it seems,
some bumping into each other and burning out that much more quickly
through it all the otter seems unaware
idly playing with its favorite rock
casting light and life everywhere it goes
and death and shadow just as equally
where the ripples slow to nothing
the void returns
and as the otter returns beneath the surface
the void will surely return
