So my MOH lent me the new Anne Bishop Dark Jewels book The Shadow Queen.
It was quite good - fun, a little more laidback than the first three, but making more sense than her more recent books. There was more from the original main characters than I expected, and yet enough about new interesting people that I really enjoyed.
It was a book more about the regular Joe's left in Terreille, about what happened after Jaenelle killed everybody (still love that) and about how Court's and Protocol work for more regular coloured Jewels.
Interesting stuff, a fun fast read.
But got me thinking:
John is totally a Warlord Prince. The rage, the cold, the spiral of power. That evil aw-shucks grin with a blast of psychic power behind it. Oh yeah.
And I can see him as a natural Opal - dark or light - who descended to Sapphire. Dark and Powerful, but not stupidly so.
And Ronon is totally a Warlord Prince, too. I mean look at the guy. Slap some Protocol remnants on him and he could totally be a Terreille survivor, tortured and dark and needing to run, but still very very deadly.
I can see Ronon as a Purple Dusk or an Opal ... maybe a Purple Dusk who descended to Opal, and maybe he varies a little between the lighter and darker power of that Jewel.
But Rodney confuses me. I can't quite see him as a Warlord Prince. He burns too hot, too fast, and I want him to always get - eventually - with John. So ... I think he would be a Warlord. Because wouldn't it be fun to see this arrogant pushy Warlord who ordered everyone around, ignored Protocol whenever it suited him and absolutely refused to take any orders from anybody, thank you very much?
If he was a Warlord Prince I think he would clash too much with John and Ronon, who could figure out a way to not kill each other on their own (probably mostly by sparring lots - 'cause Ronon could totally kick John's ass, but John's ultimately more powerful than him).
But I definately see Rodney with a dark jewel. Like Gray. Rodney is totally a gray.
He's pretty much my favourite character, though, and he IS a genius, so I wonder if it would be okay to bend the rules a little, make him a little fancy. Like what if he descended more then the possible three levels when he made his offering? Because most people probably couldn't handle that, but this is Rodney McKay. Brain the size of a planet and everything.
So what if he started out as Purple Dusk, and came out with a Grey? Or is that too much - maybe Opal. Went down, far down, and pushed the boundaries. Took too much.
And its pushed back a little, too. Made him a little unstable. Your not supposed to take too much. So his story would be figuring a way to sit with his own power, which he is probably reluctant to use, preferring to push with his brain now. And then he'd meet John and Ronon slowly start to feel comfortable in his own skin, with his own power.
I think it'd be fun.
The girls are a little more tricky: Keller could be a Healer, for sure, but Elizabeth ... I'd rather make Teyla the Queen. 'Cause she totally is. She could pull off a Queen/Black Widow combo, too, but that might be too much. Sam could be a Black Widow, and Elizabeth could be anything - a nearby queen, a widow or a healer.
Hmm....
good book glow
