I had forgotten how much pleasure I get out of walking through interesting neighborhoods, especially if they're new to me. Something to attend. So it looks like I might have enough money to do something interesting with the "long term savings" bucket. Here's my ideas so far:
- Trip to Argentina
- Lifetime membership to DragonCon
- Tesla Roadster (admittedly, a factor of magnitude greater than the others)
- New computer
- Other trips (some of which could be combinable): Armenia, Australia, France, Hawai'i, India, Kenya, Macedonia, Turkey, Ukraine
- Any other suggestions?
Audrey's visit put me well away from my regular schedule; sleeping in a half-dozen different beds, skipping my regular habits entirely, and just moving through. I'm ordinarily proud of my... as my grandmother calls it, "sticktoitiveness"... but this time I was using it as a way to escape and let things pile up rather than finding a way to continue to take care of what needs done despite the different surroundings.
As it was, though, I did have a loverly vacation with her. Curiously, Waffle House became a new favorite for her. Cars are a pain in the ass, but I do have to admit, they have a few benefits. Drove up to Nashville, got lost trying to find the restaurant to which I thought I remembered going with Swati - with the help of Audrey's GPS, eventually found "The Woodlands", which was indeed a very nice Indian restaurant, but not the one I remembered. Not sure if it moved or I misremembered. Either way, spotted dozens of teenagers in formalwear. Must be prom season. Found the hotel (Audrey found ants after we had settled in... they moved us down the hall in short order), scouted what to do in the area, decided to skip the Opry and go to a honky tonk. Strolled along Broadway checking out various places and musics, ended up going to "Robert's Western World" for a really excellent musical experience. Curious about a sign they had up about gospel music on Sundays.
The following morning, after continental breakfast (from which continent does that breakfast hail, anyways? It's always slightly different...), we went back downtown, found free parking near some federal buildings, crossed the city, and toured the Country Music Hall of Fame. Interesting history. Saw a few of the stores on Broadway that were closed the previous night, checked out the reconstructed fort. Robert's wasn't playing gospel music. Small disappointment with what seemed like every eatery closing mid-afternoon. Started heading homeward thereafter.
And further south: The following day we went to Savannah, and walked around the city by night. There was a ghost tour involved, and "The Boar's Head", a really excellent riverfront restaurant.
The next day continental breakfast happened again, Audrey took lots of pictures (still waiting to see them...), and we crossed over to Tybee Island for a dolphin boat. Unfortunately, when we got there we were misdirected by an old man on a scooter, and by the time we got to the pier we saw the boat pulling off. We decided to go to the beach and catch the next boat. Picked up some mediocre ice cream and strolled down to the end of the pier. Gorgeous day. We make it back in time for the next tour. It headed out to circle the shrimping boats, which dolphins circle in hopes of scavenge. Got to see about six dolphins, learned a bit, Audrey got some great pictures. On the way back, I felt Vikingly and, after the third shriek from the kids getting splashed at the prow, jumped up to join them and get salt in my beard.Found out about tulip poplar nectar. Will have to try.My dad retired rather suddenly, and I'm left at a bit of a loss. He's no longer two doors down from me. The department feels different, especially with all my new responsibilities. Not sure what to do at this point.Have an idea for a game representing the violence inherent in plants. Something with stacking dice and gathering energy.Sign saying "Casino Entrance ->" at the back of the fire station under construction? Admiral Ackbar has something to say about that...
More likely guess, they were grabbing scrap for temporary walls, and the stuff written on it didn't matter.Helped the Eroses move, easier than expected. Low-key. Had an absolutely splendid time at Emory's milonga. Danced almost every set, and the majority of them with Marie. Live orchestra.More skipped traditions: No specific gathering on the fifth of May (although
raoin did pick up tacos as "moving fuel" for us, at my suggestion), no Nona's gift certificate for Mothers' Day (as it has closed).I've re-checked my value system, and realized that books represent wealth to me. In furniture stores, in pictures of houses, in scenes in movies, I'm always fascinated by the libraries. Suddenly my living room and bed room make a lot more sense. Books are wealth.Had a curious misunderstanding about the term "friend zone" recently. He took it as a ploy to get into someone's pants by pretending to be a friend. I have always thought of it (and was using it at the time) as when another person puts one into the "friend" category even though one has a romantic interest in the other person.
How have you heard it used?Dad and I saw a coyote on the tracks on Frazier. Bad news. At the opposite end, in wild sightings, I heard a hawk cry out while waiting for the bus. Looked up and saw the distinctive auburn tail.Dreamt about meeting random Talley Street people at the top of a really tall parking deck (not ours), and getting a letter fining me for poor recycling practices.
