She sits in the middle of her bed
Surrounded by the lines from songs
She thought might salvage her one day
In a mess of confusion
She searches for the right words
Nothing ever seems to come out the way she intended anymore
And disappointment is always too close around the bend
All she wants is to hide for a while
Just disappear and return to a life of chance
She submerges herself in the bitter taste of coffee
To remind herself she’s awake
And snaps the band on her wrist to keep the pain under control
Carrying herself from day to day exhausts her
If it weren’t for the boy with all the promises
She would have followed through long ago
But when he speaks
He uses gentle words
And the sincerity in his voice
Lulls her to sleep on those abandoned nights
So as the books have taught her
She writes her thoughts on notebook paper
And it reads,
“Dear my one and only
We have promised each other more than I can give
I’ve been trying to stay awake
But these eyes are surrendering to the sweetest slumber
And the salt burns my skin
But the sheets keep me safe
And I long for your arms
Or your lips to trace mine
I swear I’m trying
The hardest I know how
But it’s a fight I can’t win
And you’re a hope that’s lost heart
And I’ll love you the same
As when you first looked at me
Signed- all my love”
To resemble how he signed his
And she walks to the pond
That raised her on a diet of dreams
And she rips up the paper in a release of her grief
And the ink cries through her broken pieces
And she falls to her knees in attempt to escape
The feeling that life has left her behind
god damnit, mairead... can you freaking WRITE something please?
