So there is this girl in my psych class that just grates on my nerves sometimes. I understand that it is good to ask questions, but sometimes it's like "come on, let the teacher talk, your questions really aren't that pertinent." And she doesn't hide her feelings on a lot of controvercial topics, such as adolescent sexuality, homosexuality, birth control, and abortion. And of course they are all contrary to what I believe in... Well, we had a survey in class today with three statements, and you had to agree or disagree with them. It was clear that most of the class was fairly liberal, in that they agreed that as mental health professionals they would advise an adolescent on birth control and abortion if they asked about it. And the girl freaked out. She started insisting that she was looking out for the unborn babies, and that she could never ever work with someone who wanted an abortion. Well, our professor told her straight up that as a mental health professional, you have to remain neutral and cannot force your beliefs on someone else, and he seriously told her to rethink her career choice if she could not get over it. She was fuming.
I feel kinda bad for her, since her beliefs are so important to her and are seriously going to be getting in the way of a lot of work she'll be getting. But that "pro-life, homosexuality is a SIN!!!, abstinence-only education, praise God!" crap that you get way too often down here in the Bible belt is pissing me off.
