I read Kevin Smith's "Quiver" run on Green Arrow today. In the preface, it's mentioned that a lot of people criticized it for being too mired in Green Arrow continuity. Those people said it should've been written so that no one would need to know any character / universe history. It's something a lot of comic writers are doing these days: Ignore the past, because the twelve-year-old picking it up isn't familiar with it.
Speaking as someone who'd barely touched Green Arrow before....I think it was fabulous that he did it this way. Anything I didn't know, I was able to pick up on / figure out because I am not a moron or a small child (If I was the latter, I would hope my mommy would take such a graphic graphic novel away from me).
And as for what I did know, it was great to see it dealt with. And when I caught a familiar name and said "Ooh! Obscure Sandman reference!" only to turn a page and go "Ooh! Blatant incorporation of Sandman! It was technically DC, after all," that was fun.
And when I said "Did that serial killer just make a joke referring to comic that was last done by Phil Foglio of Girl Genius?" only to turn the page and say. "Oh my god, it wasn't just a jo...that was for DC, wasn't it?" ...Well, I was slightly sick to my stomach from the circumstances the poor character was in, but anything that could lead to more appreciation of the Foglios is cool.
So, anyway, that was interesting.
Also finally got my hands on a bunch of Young Avengers (had to, since they crossed over with Runaways). Enjoyable.
Kang is Nathaniel Richards? And this Kang has a crush on Cassie Lang? Pretty weird, since so did Nathaniel Richards's son (biologically). There's no way the creative team would've decided to use Cassie if they didn't know the issues she was in with Kristoff. I was always fond of that boy. Maybe they'll give him an apperance sometime, if only to give Cassie a slight squick if the biological information is ever revealed.
Okay, so, that was my little spout of Geeking-out for the day.
