Gah

I have to cut my time off short and go back to work tomorrow to deal with a crisis. Argh. Oh, well, at least we got the last of the big pieces of furniture we were taking moved today, before Kathy leaves. If I could, I'd take the next week off to just huddle in bed and drink hot chocolate, but that's not gonna happen. My cousin will be here tomorrow afternoon (he's staying at a hotel, but I don't know if he'll want to do dinner or anything -- I haven't seen him since we were kids). And Mom decided that she did want to look through the other jewelry boxes after all, so I'll need to take her over there one last time this weekend.

Today I got almost everything shipped. There are a couple of little things for my niece and nephew that didn't make it into the big box, and the little antique children's chairs for my sister, that still need to go. I spent the rest of the afternoon running things back and forth to Mom, and apologizing abjectly to the dog. Mom seemed to be in better spirits today. Her phone is working now, which I think helped. I got most of her address changes done, but there are still several important ones to go...

A couple of bright spots: I found a bunch of my own earrings I thought had been lost forever, and in trying to sort out Mom's receipts and bills, I discovered that what I had thought was Social Security payments is actually the survivor's benefits from Dad's city pension, and she has a whole different Social Security payment coming in under her own SS#. Which means that her long-term financial situation is not nearly as iffy as I had thought it was, and the odds of her outliving her savings is much lower than I'd feared. That's a huge load off my mind, assuming that the Republicans don't manage to totally destroy Social Security in the next ten years. It may not be around for me when I come to need it, but at least it'll be there for Mom.

I can't say I feel very sorry for the subset of Bangel shippers who are snittily declaring the latest issue of BtVS S10 the Worst Issue Ever. Bitca, please -- we had to sit through five issues (OK, three. It just felt like five) of Buffy gleefully boning the guy who'd just murdered a few hundred of her fellow Slayers (oh, pardon me, he only ordered other people to murder them) in order to give her a cosmic roofie on the advice of a talking dog. I think y'all can live through a one-panel kiss (which will doubtless be followed by Spike pushing her away for her own good, because apparently that's part of the contract for non-Twangelized vampires with souls.)

Be that as it may, I must admit that this issue means that the odds that I will have to make good on the bet I made several years ago have risen somewhat. I would put them at less than one chance in five, but that's substantially more than the zero they were in 2011. I don't think I ever did get around to narrowing down the list...
