IOW we went to see the movie theater version of the Met's Parsifal last night. I hadn't realized it would be quite that long - I mean, it's Wagner, of course it's long, but this was a production with massive complicated sets (towering cliffs, a lake full of blood, very impressive) that took a good half hour or more to change. And they didn't cut

Wagner's overtures are about all the Wagner I can take. He sure had a lot of emotionalism in his music.

Plus I just cannot help remembering how much the Nazis loved him. Not really fair of me, I know.

I saw "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" at the Chicago Lyric Opera this month, and it was superb -- long, but superb.

There is a reason why Wagner splits the music world down the middle and you are either a Wagnerian or you aren't. My youthful rebellion consisted of ringing up my parents and telling them I thought maybe I liked Wagner. Then I listened to some without half a bottle of whiskey inside me and discovered that no, it was all right, I didn't.
