More pretty from the Melbourne convention. Damn, I hope he keeps his hair like that, because GUH. There's a couple other posts from this convention at
marsters_daily but this one has the most pictures. Looks like they were snagged from the Marsters of Oz forum, to give credit where it's due.
We went to see Howl's Moving Castle this weekend.
I liked it a lot--the animation was gorgeous, as expected, and the castle itself was a tour-de-force. It's been several years since I read the book, and it was never one of my favorite DWJs anyhow, so I didn't mind the departures much, and indeed, I'm not absolutely positive what all of them were. They cut the subplot about Earth (wise move, I think) and they made Howl much more likeable. I don't recall the war subplot having such prominence in the book, either, and I'm pretty sure that Lady Suliman wasn't an antagonist, just one more responsibility Howl was trying to escape. All in all, I think it was one of the better adaptions I've seen, and I think I may like it better than the book, if only for the breathtaking visuals.
They didn't show the Narnia trailer at Howl, though we caught a part of it, sans sound, in the lobby. I really, really hope the movie lives up to the special effects, because DAMN. But SFX are easy these days; it's the writing that will make it or break it.
I'm not terribly excited about Batman Begins. I suppose we'll see it eventually, but whatever. Dark Knight, obssession, yadda yadda, been there, done that, read the Frank Miller version back when it was a stunning new revisioning of the character. Meh. There was something else I knida wanted to see...oh yeah, Star Wars. (sigh) I don't know. The ringing endorsements of "It doesn't suck as much as the first two did!" have somehow failed to whip up my enthusiasm.
We're going to barbeque ribs this afternoon, and maybe go see the fireworks this evening. Not sure about that. It's going to be killer hot, and Kathy was making noises about staying in and watching them on TV. Which to my mind is a pointless exercise, but well, it will be killer hot. But. FIREWORKS!
Maybe if I tell myself that it's a fireworks boycott to protest the administration's Iraq policy...
