My job!

Jan 30, 2011 22:22

I just had a look back over my recent posts and realised I haven't really explained what my new job entails.

The name of the company is Ai Media (pronounced AI Media in spite of the spelling). The website is www.ai-media.tv

We provide captioning services. Most important of all, the Ai-Live schools captioning service which works thusly:

* Deaf student in classroom, with a laptop and and internet connection.
* Teacher in the classroom wearing a Bluetooth headset, connected to a phone.
* Phone picking up the audio and conference-calling it to us, the captioners, who may be at our own homes, or in the office in Macquarie Park.
* Captioners repeat the teacher's speech in such a way that our voice-recognition program, Dragon, can understand it and turn it into legible text and not gobbledegook.
* Text goes back across the interwebs and arrives on the student's laptop screen about five seconds after the teacher said it.
* Student is happy because they can understand about a zillion times more of what has been going on in the classroom.

No, you can't just hook the teacher up to Dragon and let them make their own captions, as the technology is not smart enough. Language needs to be filtered through a human brain, it's too crazy for computers.

Now, I must run and pick up the Fuzzy from work!
