So, the news first: We have a bass player! His name is Steve and he's 38 years old. Makes us a feel a tad young... but well worth it because he has a TON of experience. He will be playing with us at what I hope is our last show at burts for a while. After this next show on Friday I hope to find a couple of bookings elsewhere.
I've been stuck in jazz land for the past couple of weeks. Ive been trying to make my Solo's go somewhere. My solo's used to be based on the pentatonic scales alone. Pento scales are awesome because you just have to memorize one scale for any chord progression and just make sure that you play the scale in the key that you are in. Jazz is much much different. Instead of just one scale for all chords... everytime you play a new chord you have to choose a new scale, mode, arpeggio etc to compliment that one chord.
SO... Say you have a progression of Emaj/ Am/ Dmaj/ Em. I'll open my solo with an arpeggio in E. Then I'll slide down and play part of the dorian mode in A. Then on to another arpeggio in D (but I may add the seventh of the chord just to change the feel a bit.) Then I can either use a minor scale mode on the Em...or I can use the pentatonic minor scale to fill in the holes until I can work my way back to the Emaj chord.
Ive been listening to alot of jazz lately too. Not just listening to enjoy but to hear the chord changes. Once I hear the change I'll try to figure out which scale is being played and where in the scale the artist chose to begin.
Brain r hurt.
I feel much better about my life lately. Yeah, Im working a job that kinda blows... But im also performing and learning. Its a good feeling to leave work and head right off to Pats or to JJ's for three beautiful hours of music and connecting to other people through that music.
