Applique on Viking Women's Clothing

Mar 16, 2013 13:55

Someone quite some time ago had asked me about whether there was evidence for the big appliqué that have become popular on apron dresses, and I said then that I couldn't think of any.

There is some evidence for appliqué, but not for the way said appliqué is commonly worked in the SCA.

The clothing from the Oseberg burial seems to have had appliqué worked in *strips* of silk (including around the neckline) and of embroidered wool, some with animals on.
