A More Authentic Hem Originally uploaded by
Ragnvaeig. Via Flickr:Am in the process of upping my game as far as my apron dresses are concerned. Am redoing the hems in the York sewing thread I spun.
The thread was made on a spindle that recreated a spindle found at Jorvik. It was made from Z-spun singles spun with a twist between 20º and 50º away from the vertical, then S-plied into a 2-ply thread of a total diameter of about a mm, which is within the 0.8-1.5 mm range for Viking textiles at York.
The seam uses stitches that are in line with the 3-5 mm stitch length found at Haithabu. The needle is a hand-made bronze needle I purchased, and it sews nicely.
