Carl Sagan in the Kitchen

Apple = Nucleus
Originally uploaded by Ragnvaeig. In order to celebrate Carl Sagan Day on 9 November, I intend to make an apple pie from scratch.
Why? In his Cosmos series, Sagan reminded us that, "If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe," implying that there are physical and chemical principles at work in everyday life, and that there is beauty to be found in such order.
I wanted a slightly more permanent bit of Sagan's wisdom in the kitchen, so I've embroidered a panel that I shall incorporate into a thermal insulator (i.e. hot pad!) for regular use in the kitchen. The central motif is a depiction of a lithium atom using the Rutherford-Bohr atomic model, half-apples representing the electrons and a whole apple representing the nucleus, with Sagan's quote around the border--clearer view here.
If anyone wants the pattern, I've uploaded it here.
What are you doing for Carl Sagan Day?
