SCA persona backstories

Have heard some really adventuresome SCA persona stories lately, quite a few of which involve traveling over the greater part of Europe. Am starting to feel like my Norwegian homesteader is boring by comparison, but all I really use my persona information for is to narrow down what clothing and wares I might want for myself in order to enrich my re-enacting experience. Have never bothered coming up with adventures to have as this person, as I haven't really felt the need.

So, personas and backstories: have you bothered? Into how much detail have you gone? What does it add to your experience? Other opinions?
