MY parents bought another house in Palo Alto, this time a 3bdrm/2br for $1.2 million, and it's much closer to El Camino and University Ave, which in Palo Alto, means a much better neighborhood. The old one was nice too, but it was mostly just Asians who just wanted to live in Palo Alto for the good school district. Now we're midtown.
Having grown up with rice farmers, my parents are ridiculously thrifty people. For the 9.5 years we've been in America, they almost never ate out, packed their lunches everyday to work. In fact, although we live in Palo Alto, we almost never shop in Palo Alto. They always just drive to a Chinese grocery market 15 miles away on Sundays, and get enough food for the whole week. And forget about getting a haircut here. It's always some Vietamese fob in Cupertino who cuts hair for $12.
I asked my mom why she thinks a house like this would worth $1.2 million. She told me about the wonderful location, good schools, and nice neighborhood.
I said, "Mom, if all the white people in our neighborhood moved elsewhere, you could lose $500,000 or more. Don't you think that's a shaky foundation to build your life savings on?"
"What are you talking about? That's never going to happen."
"Maybe, but I don't think you should trust white people like that."
