This year I helped make an independent short film called "The New 'N' Word" which is about a workplace dispute in a modern-day office. The writer/director won an award for the screenplay, and now he is submitting it to film festivals in an effort to get considered for the Academy Awards in the short film categories. He's already submitted to Sundance and Ann Arbor, and hopes to hit a bunch more in the coming year.
I have all of one line in this film, but it was a lot of fun and it has some great people involved with it. That's why I have no problem asking for your financial help to get this film into as many festivals as possible.
They have started a page at KickStarter, which is a grass-roots way of accumulating backers. Each backer can pledge as little as $25, and unless the project gets to the stated goal, no money changes hands. The page for the film is:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/269298916/the-new-n-word. They need to hit their goal of $20,000 by Jan 7, so if you have extra untagged money lying around (I know, like who does right now?) consider backing some great local artists.
Also, I've been told that, since the Lao Heritage Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) organization, is the fiscal sponsor of the film, all donations are tax-deductible. So there is that.
