You Say You Want A Resolution? (sorry, Beatles)

Some of you know that over the last several years I have tried various means to lose weight and have had varying degrees of minor success. I have come to realize that the root cause of not having a better track record is that I am really bad at cracking my own whip. So, in mid-December I decided to do something about that, namely hire someone to crack the whip for me. That was when I started seeing a personal trainer and nutritionist.

He started off by limiting my caloric intake, having me eat more protein, less junk, and fewer carbs toward the end of the day. I got rather specific information in this area, as opposed to the vague suggestions I'd get from my doctor because his hands are tied up by the insurance or something. Then he started having me come into the gym and work out twice a week. He would have me do specific exercises in an effort to build muscle. Most of the other days I would come in to do cardio on the elliptical and stationary bike. I have been following these instruction fairly religiously with rare exception.

Now, am I doing this because I want to be more fit, or simply because I don't want to disappoint my trainer? Probably a bit of both, but I don't care. I definitely feel more in shape than before. When I started, there were certain exercises that I struggled to do, and now I can do them much more ably, even with heavier weights. And for those of you that like numbers, last week was my six-week weigh-in and I'd lost 14 pounds.

In another six weeks is my 45th birthday. At the current rate I will be in better health then than I had been on my 35th.
