As the beach party drifted apart, the sky began to turn shades of red and orange. Despite spending most of the day there, Chris had no desire to return to the castle. She hoped Borus would indulge her and stay a little longer as watching the sunset was a luxury she rarely afforded herself.
Dressed once again in her sundress, she sat on the blanket she'd brought with her and smiled at him. "This is what I missed being away."
Stepping out of the lake to dry off and shaking the excess water from his hair as he did so, Borus smiled back at Chris, walking over to her side. "I bet. It's much more peaceful here than it is at the castle. Or in Vinay, even. Especially where the Council is concerned." The blonde knight plopped down on the blanket next to her and leaned back on his arms as he gazed out across the lake. "I'm sorry you had to go ..."
She smiled and glanced at him appreciately before turning back to look towards the horizon. "I look forward to the day I'm free of them, but I felt I had to go this time--especially after all of the problems that happened last summer."
"Ah, you mean when they practically invaded Budehuc?" He glanced at her before shaking his head. "I can't believe them sometimes. Did the war mean nothing?"
"To most of them, the war meant an increase in profits." Leaning back on her arms, she craned her neck. "They do not see us as knights, Borus. They see us as their pawns."
The disgusted look on his face quickly changed into one of anger. "And we are not! We are knights for the people of Zexen and them alone! We are not pawns for their greedy little schemes. I swear, if they so much as breathe another plot in my presence, Goddess help me, I might not be able to hold back."
She reached a hand towards him. "I know, Borus. I feel the same way. But let's enjoy the evening and not let it be spoiled by those greedy idiots."
And just as quickly as the anger sparked inside him, it subsided again at her words, like only she could do. He smiled a little as he took her hand and gave it a squeeze. "You're right. I'm sorry, Lady Chris. It's a beautiful evening and it's being spent with you. That's all that matters."
A blush slipped across her cheeks as she felt his hand clasp over hers. "I brought some wine in the picnic basket. It's probably not as good as the vintages you normally procure, but..." She trailed off, giving him a wink. "I think it'll do."
Borus smiled at that and decided that Chris doesn't blush enough. "I'm sure it's just as good. After all, I haven't tasted all the wines out there, contrary to popular belief." He releases her hand for a moment to fetch the basket and pull out the bottle and two glasses. He glances at the bottle for a moment before uncorking it and pours them each a glass. "I haven't heard of it before but I do enjoy trying new wines."
She rolled onto her side and propped her chin on her wrist as she watched him pour the wine. "Really? Our Borus, king of his wine cabinet in Brass Castle has not sampled all of the vintages of Budehuc?"
Raising an eyebrow, Borus tsks with a smirk as he hands her a glass. "It's hard to believe, I know, but true. Am I no longer the man you thought I was?"
"I wouldn't go that far." Sitting up, she raised her glass towards him. "To a perfect day, a beautiful evening and even better company."
Now it was his turn to blush and he smiled as he raised his glass to touch hers with it gently. "I can toast to that." Borus then raised the glass to his lips for a few moments before lowering it again, nodding in appreciation. "It's pretty good."
"Glad I made a good pick," she said after taking a sip. Looking out at the evening sky, she smiled. "Zexen is just over there and yet, when I was there, this place seemed so far away."
He followed her gaze and smiled as well, nodding as he took another sip. "And it seemed like you -were- far away. But you're back now and I'm glad." Glancing back at her a little shyly, Borus added, "I did miss you."
"And I missed you," she said with a small smile between a sip and a glance over her glass. "I'm glad to be back, though."
"I hope you won't need to leave again anytime soon." He sighed, gazing back at the scene in front of them, reaching for her hand again. "Otherwise, I'll follow you."
She let him take her hand and smiled. "But what if I have to order you stay and hold down the fort?" she teased. "I mean...Percival's injured, and with Salome always buried in paperwork, I don't have any else to trust with such matters."
A look of consternation crossed Borus' face for a moment before he let out a sigh. "You're right, of course. But I'm not going to like being away from you again."
She drew herself closer to him and reached to touch his cheek. "Let's hope it's not for awhile, then."
"Ah, y-yeah ..." He blushed the more at her touch, blinking a few times before relaxing again. Smiling again, he took her hand and pressed the back of it to his lips. "I promise I won't think anymore about it until then."
She blushed as she felt his lips touch her hand. His breath was warm and comforting and she leaned a bit closer to him. "Fair enough."
He let her lean into him as he gazed back at the colorful sky. "You know, it's been awhile since I actually sat and watched the sunset. I really should do it more often ..."
Curled into his arms, she smiled and brushed her cheek towards his. "We both should."
"Better still." A sigh escaped his lips again and he closed his eyes for a moment before opening them again as he felt her face touch his own. "Lady Chris ..."
"Hmm?" she asked, not wanting to move from where they were at--the sunset, the wine and the way Borus seemed less afraid to hold her were all too perfect to let go.
He swallowed a little. "I ... I wish this evening would never end." Sighing again, he gently pulls her closer, burying his face in her hair, breathing in her scent.
"Me either," she said, turning her head slightly to face him and nervously search his eyes.
Borus gazed back as she did so, feeling his heart jump and get caught in his throat. He opened his mouth to say something, but when he couldn't get any words out, he opted to fill the momentary silence with a quick kiss.
Her eyes fluttered closed despite her anxiety and Chris leaned into his kiss. The warmth of his breath on her lips and the tenderness of his touch made her heart race and she reached to tangle her hand in his blonde hair.
For some reason, Borus wasn't expecting her to be so receptive and he blushed furiously as he was aware of her fingers in his hair. He pulled back for a moment but after seeing the content look on her face, he felt a pull inside and leaned in to kiss her again, a little more confidently the second time around.
Smiling as she returned the second kiss, Chris tugged at his hair--she loved the way it felt between her fingers. Finally drawing back from him slowly, she smiled, her cheeks a deep red as she wondered, dizzily, when he would kiss her like that again.
He reluctantly let her pull back and glanced at her with concern. "Ah, Lady Chris ... I'm sorry if I ..."
Still blushing, she smiled and pressed a finger to his lips. "Nothing to be sorry about. I quite liked that, Borus."
Smiling again, Borus took a hold of the finger on his lips with one hand. "I just wanted to be sure I didn't overstep my bounds." He kissed her fingertip and added, "I don't want to be too forward or make you uncomfortable so ... don't hesitate to let me know ..."
"I promise, but I doubt you will," she said, leaning forward to brush her lips against his one more time.
Borus sighed softly as she kissed him again, murmuring quietly, "I've wanted this ... -you- for so long now ... I'm so glad ... it has happened." He reluctantly pulls back again after a small peck on her cheek. "Thankfully, we have all the time in the world to catch up."
She smiled and nodded to him as she nervously bit her lip. "Yes, we do." Looking out at the lowered sun, she gazed off into the distance, perfectly content not to move from his arms.
