What about the eunuchs?

Feb 12, 2010 13:18

Across the internet pond at Dreamwidth resides a comics community called Scans Daily. There, members share panels or pages from comics they like or hate for discussion. It's nice, friendly, and good times are usually had.

Usually. Because every once in a while, someone will say something like this:

I'm no expert in these matters, but the few male-to-female transsexuals I've seen are always very... well, MANNISH looking - they're not quite convincing as women; there's always a vaguely masculine cast to their features.

Trans and ally members are understandably upset. Cue mod action, posted the following day.

The post is a rough one to read--it details a violent attack and ensuing police fuckery, with a dash of uncaring bystanders. Still, many members give their thanks. It's something, they feel, that had to be said.

Other members, however, are not sure a comics community is the appropriate place to shoot down bigotry.

Others want to know why Trans members were so mean to that first commenter, who truly did not intend to offend anyone!

Others wish the Trans members of the community would just tone it down, I mean, jeez. Is this any way to create a dialogue? Is this any way to bring the ignorant around to their way of thinking?

Others are now afraid to post anything, for fear of getting screamed at.

And still others want to know, "What about the eunuchs?"

Lastly, A Very Special Flounce, for your pleasure.
