As if I needed another reason to hate the Girl Scouts.

Found this on SF Drama but thought wow, it reeeally doesn't belong over there, it belongs over here.

A 7-year-old trans girl (who the article really must stop calling a boy if she in fact indentifies as a girl) wanted to join the Girl Scouts and the Girl Scouts decided that nope, can't let ya do that, Starfox. Their reasoning was that she "has boy ( Read more... )

Well the general point is still there and it's still appalling regardless. How does what that Louisina troop is doing look to that little girl or any other trans girls and boys? It doesn't matter if it was in Louisiana or Indiana or Hawaii or wherever else, it's still a rotten thing to do.

Well, the point I think waytogojeremy is making is that it's not the fault of the GSA that several troop leaders were godawful. The title and content of your post implies that this gives people a reason to hate Girl Scouts altogether, when the organization itself is in fact inclusive.

Were those troop leaders disgusting and deserving to be discussed here? Hell yes they are. Are they reflective of the GSA as a whole? Nah, it's a pretty good organization.

This. I don't recall all the details, but this was originally about the Girl Scouts standing up for this girl and not letting individuals discriminate.

Yeah, it's rotten that an entirely independent GSA group responded poorly, but you still completely misrepresented the entire events, and make it seem like all of GSA is at fault, when it is clearly not. You could always clarify your post, instead of becoming defensive about your complete lack of reading comprehension skills.

Independent GSA troupes aren't always wonderful, but as a whole, the GSA is a really great, inclusive group and NOTHING like the Boy Scouts (they are not at all related).

You mention this is "yet another reason" you dislike the GSA. What are your other reasons? Or, consistent with your lack of knowledge, are you confusing them with the Boy Scouts, when they are not related?

It really helps to research things before you start making claims and screaming how awful they are, when it's clear you don't really know what they are about.

I don't like the Girl Scouts 'cause when I was in there, instead of learning things like survivalism and camping and stuff they teach in the Boy Scouts (do they still teach firearms in the Boy Scouts?), we learned how to cook pies and sell cookies and draw pictures of cities. Uck.

It might've been just my troop though.

Right, and it was an independent GSA group.

Know what I did in my GSA? We went camping. A LOT.

And, you know, I've also done some research on the organization instead of making grand, incorrect assumptions about the whole organization.

You didn't even get the point of the article you posted, which you clearly didn't really read, at all, and instead planted your bias firmly on it from the very beginning.

My troop did camping, first aid, trail reading, navigation, hiking, rope/teamwork courses, survival skills, and science as well as cooking, make-up/fashion, art, music, and crafts. My mom was a horrible mother (in some ways downright abusive), but she was a good troop leader to every other girl in the group. The group depends on who leads it. The national org is really good about a lot of issues - I know a lot of queer women who were very empowered by Girl Scouts.

And you never did clarify your original post to say that you had a huge reading comprehensive fail and that the events you described are not even close to what actually happened. Awesome.
