Regretsy, a website known for snarking weird or tasteless products for sale on Etsy, as well as for its April's Army charity work, decided they were going to start a charity to
help families in poverty give their kids a Christmas this year. The charity was quickly overfunded in just a couple of hours, meaning yay! April could not only send toys for the kids, but send a monetary gift to the families as well. It's like a Christmas-movie miracle come to life!
That is, until Paypal decided to shut it down because April picked the wrong button to post on her website and because apparently donating to poor families was "not a worthy cause."
You see, apparently
April should've chosen the "Buy now" or "Shopping Cart" button instead of the "Donate" button, even though she's taking, y'know, DONATIONS for a charity and even though she's never had any instances of fraud. Because of that, she was forced to manually GIVE BACK all the money she was sent for the families. But it's okay, because Paypal collects a fee for the refunds she had to issue, so at least Paypal gets a Christmas this year.
And to add the icing on the stop of the fuckery cake, Paypal decides
they are shutting down the entire project because "the Donate button can be used for worthy causes, and what you're doing is not a worthy cause, it's charity" and "you can raise money for a sick cat, but not for poor people." Okay, that's nice. I mean, cats are waaaaaay more important than young children who may get to see nothing under the tree this Christmas when they are in a bad enough situation as it is. So that means not only are there no monetary funds for the families, but they don't even get to send out the toys to the kids. And on top of all that the representative talking to April is probably the Scroogiest and rudest asshole I've ever seen, and almost seems determined to squash any possible methods she has of continuing the charity.
Merry Christmas to you too, Paypal.
