So it turns out my hometown is now
prohibiting condoms from being sold without a prescription. Why so much hate for condoms?
Well, the village
denounces the use of condoms as far as they promote and sanction immoral sexual congresses among the unmarried and especially among the young, thereby contradicting the Constitutional injunction that the State “shall promote and protect … the physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual and social well-being” of the youth. Oh, and
health care providers are no longer allowed to prescribe "abortifacients" within the jurisdiction of the village. Fair enough, abortion is illegal in the Philippines...but wait. "Abortifacients" according to this ordinance apparently include:
-oral contraceptive pills
-IUDs
-hormonal contraceptives like Norplant and DepoProvera
All in the name of "the protection of the unborn and the institutions of marriage and family."
Well, what about the pregnant women's well-being? Anyone care about that? Sure: the ordinance aims "to ensure the continued well-being and good health of the mother by protecting her from any act or threat that may adversely affect the viability of the unborn child in all stages of the mother’s pregnancy and even after the child’s delivery." Uh-huh. Sounds like they sure do care for women apart from being baby-making vessels.
What about people's right to informed consent and choices? Psh, that "freedom" thing is nonsense! "The BARANGAY lastly deduces from pertinent Constitutional tenets that since life begins at conception there is no place for the so-called “free choice” argument to justify compulsory sex education in the schools within its territorial jurisdiction"
Oh, and if you have different ideas about what might constitute reproductive health,
get ready to have your house egged.
