Chee is dead.

Will and I came back from our trip to the Outer Banks around 1 last night. I knew something was wrong when I couldn't hear her meowing furiously at us through the door. Chee has always known when I was coming home. She always stood at the door screaming with excitement to see me come home. As I slid the key in the lock, I stopped myself before turning it just to double check the number on the door.

When we got inside, there was an unpleasant smell right inside the apartment. Will thought the outside cat that has been hanging around might have sprayed the door, but it was definitely not the smell of cat spray. I looked around to see Graves and Shinobi slinking about. Uncertain.

I called for Chee but she didn't come. She always comes.

I saw her tail on the floor but the table blocked the rest of her from my view. I ran over to her and saw she wasn't moving. She was was dead and I went into hysterics. She looked like she had been walking along and then she just fell over. She wasn't curled up at all. I couldn't think. I couldn't do anything but cry and moan.

Will held me for a while and then began making plans. I don't know what I would do without him right now. He wrapped her up and was so loving and gentle throughout. I called my mom. Will prepared a cooler for her tiny body.

There were no marks on her but there was some blood coming from her mouth. Not a lot. I've looked online...as I always do...and have found a few things that could be the cause of her death. Thus far, the most likely seems to be an aneurysm. She could also have had heart failure. Blood could also indicate internal bleeding. The only thing that I found in the apartment that could have caused that was a chair had been knocked over. I don't see Chee being hit by it though. There were other possibilities mentioned - heart worm, different diseases, bacteria, etc.

Chee had never been a very healthy cat. She always had some breathing issues - which the vet (a different one than we use now) stated was due to her genetics and squished face. Lately, she seemed to be doing better than she ever had before. She played with Graves. Actually played with him. They would chase each other through the apartment and wrestle. She would play with her toys with such vigor and there was absolutely no indication that she was sick.

She just...died.

And I haven't cried this much since Monster died.
