Musically, no one can deny that The Used have improved. There is anew quality present in their sound - a new clarity to the voice of front-man Bert McCracken and new sort of experimental daring in the layering of the instrumental tracks. The new record promises to be a loud success for the band; something that could potentially propel them past their festival-tour calling card and the highly gossip-worthy rift between McCracken and My Chemical Romance front-man Gerard Way.
The new single is a good one. Made up of a whole lot of rock and insanity and dashed creatively with a hint of vaudeville piano tossed none-to-gently together and slathered liberally with the dirt-and-grime image that McCracken seems to adore clinging to, if does an exceptional job of re-introducing the band to its adoring public. A song about “a kind of delusional state of mind and losing yourself in the moments of the day,” The Bird and the Worm presents an image of desperation sprinkled with multiple personality disorder and hallucinations while McCracken faces off with his obviously darker inner reflection. And while I cannot claim to be an avid fan of the band, I can claim to be a rather large fan of this song - and this video. The gritty desperation couple with awkward imagery, sporadic band shots and McCracken’s evil-reflective-self attempting to drown him in a couch are all awesome enough to keep the view interested while the more risqué and off-kilter (but more smoother) approach to the music in this song promises to make listeners, and fans, very happy with what is to come.
