I hear a lot about feminism. I hear that I am oppressed by the patriarchy, and that men do not have to worry about this. I hear a lot of people lamenting at the oppression they feel at the hands of men in general.
While I do not dispute that women are oppressed all over the world and in a multitude of ways, I am concerned at what I do not hear.
I do not hear an outcry at the depiction of men on television, magazines, and in movies. I do not hear an outcry at the unfair generalizations that men have to deal with every day. I do not hear an outcry at the stereotype of the chauvinist pig that seems to be promoted by many women who claim to want equality.
Men on television are idiotic, incompetent buffoons, or lady-chasing, sexist pigs. Men in movies, even the ones that are supposed to be romantic, are still generally incompetent, womanizing, etc. I sometimes wonder how these men are supposed to have survived before their long-suffering and fairly bitchy wives flew in to take care of them.
It's not that I don't see the female stereotypes being shown as well, but it seems to me that women on television are becoming somewhat more empowered, and usually even have jobs nowadays. Men, on the other hand, have degenerated into bumbling, barking fools. And it seems to me that while each instance of women being portrayed unfairly is met with internet and IRL outrage, blogging, news reports and all kinds of other raging, it's not only OK, but expected for men to be portrayed just as unfairly.
I wish that people would see that sexism is a problem that affects all genders. male, female, neither and everything in between.
