The other day I was reading an article about how states were going to enact legislation against picketing at funerals. The reason; Becuase a certain church in the south has taken it upon themselves to picket the funerals of soldiers returning from Iraq. The reason, they believe that the bloodshed of 9/11 was a curse from God on the United States because of out tolerance of homosexuality. You may have heard of the picket signs that read "GOD HATES FAGS". Well, they have a website called www.godhatesfags.com. So, as curious as I am I went to check out the site, and I wept. I cried. So called "christians" spewing some of the most blatant hate speech against homosexuals. And we wonder why homosexuals hate Christians so much.
Now, I am not condoning homosexuality in any way, shape, or form. It is a sin, it says so in the bible. But what struck me was the lack of grace from these people. There is a difference between tolerance and grace. Grace is undeserved favor. A gift from God. It s by grace that we are saved. That means while we are still sinners, God saved, anyways.
Homosexuality is not the only sin in the bible. Have you ever lied. Have you ever looked lustfully at another woman. Are you having promiscuous sex. Jesus even went so far as to say that even a little white lie carries the same punishment as murder. Wow!!!!
We are commanded to love others, even those that hurt us. And that is the scandal of God's grace. We are commanded to even love those who do us harm. Like the terrorists of 9/11. Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, Timothy McVeigh. That is the scandal of God's grace. It is available to everyone. EVERYONE!!!!
Love can only bridge the gap. I certainly hope these people that run this website will see that love some day. Becuase we are all sinners. We are saved by grace.
