This was confirmed a moment later by Raffles himself. "He's seems very ... keen on you," he commented.
"Er, yes. Yes, we've been getting along rather well," I stammered in reply. "I'll talk to him about perhaps meeting you tomorrow."
"Don't worry about it, Bunny. Just remember that we've a job to do before too long. I'll talk to you soon. Goodbye."
"Goodbye, Raffles," I said, and hung up the telephone. "Well, really! You could have said that a little differently, Sebastian!" I exclaimed, sitting down with some force next to my friend. "The things Raffles must be thinking of us now -- it isn't decent!"
Sebastian, as ever, took my outburst in his stride. "Allow him to think what he likes. I've as much right to spend time with you by m'self as he does." He paused, and after a short while spoke again: "Besides, would it be so terrible?" I noticed he was very carefully not meeting my eye.
I must confess at this point that I have indulged in many more sins than simple theft. At one point or another in my life I have committed every one of the cardinal sins, and, although I am not a religious man, I do feel some shame in this fact. In particular, I feel shame that I should allow my mind to stray to lustful thoughts -- and not simply that, but that it should stray towards lustful thoughts of other gentlemen. I was raised, as all of us are, to believe that such thoughts are unnatural and disgusting, and I quite believe it myself; for all of my admiration of members of the same sex as I, I have never once acted upon these thoughts. When Sebastian said these words to me, I could not believe that he would be as polluted in morals as I, and, moreover, that I should be the cause of such debauched thoughts. Very carefully, and now it was I who was avoiding his gaze, I asked him what he meant. He scoffed, "Oh come now, Harry. You know perfectly well what I meant by that. Throw me out of your home if you must; I only pray that you allow me to dress first. You can't have missed the way I feel about you! I came here innocently enough, to reunite with an old friend, but I can't help but feel-- well, it doesn't matter." And with that, he stood, his shoulders slumped in abject misery, and made towards his clothing folded neatly on the table.

"Oh, Harry, you are a good friend!" he cried joyfully. "How many others would accept my behaviour?" As he held me, I thought back to our time spent together yesterday and this morning, and thought myself foolish for not noticing something amiss with Sebastian's behaviour; his open relief that I should be so fond of him, his frequent touches of my hand and arm, his bright gaze upon my face, and now his bare legs beneath his borrowed nightgown pressed against mine. I will not deny that Sebastian was a handsome enough fellow, indeed I had been struck by his looks as soon as I had opened the door to him yesterday, and his dark curls framed his features quite pleasantly... but to humour him now for the sake of doing so felt cruel. I could not announce my affections as being anything more than platonic, although I will admit I was horribly tempted; that I had found someone who would not judge me for my perversions! One who found me attractive and whom had all but offered himself up to me! I would not abuse the trust he had placed in me, however. I returned the embrace he held me in so tightly, only to pull away after a moment.
"I couldn't do anything but accept it, Sebastian," I said, smoothing back his hair from his forehead, "but you must know that nothing can come of it." The crestfallen expression that fell upon him! I nearly took back my words, but, seeing the importance that I should set boundaries, I fought on. "You know I care for you dearly, and that won't change -- but we have just met again only yesterday. Let us stay friends."
Poor Sebastian remained downcast for several hours afterwards, even as I took his arm to walk through the park and talked on and on about various topics. It was only when I mentioned Raffles that Sebastian sprang into life. "This Raffles chap," he announced suddenly, "are you and he simply friends?"
