Little late on the uptake here, but I blame the surgery for that. :)
Sometimes parents just get scared for their kids. I knew since I was in 9th grade that I was going to college to major in Geology. My mother was always trying to get me to switch to something like business management or accounting or computer science because they were the "it" jobs out there on the job market and I'd be "guaranteed to make good money." I flat out told her that I was sorry, but had to disagree with her. There was no way I was going to spend time and money on a college degree that I was going to hate for the rest of my life doing a job I didn't like.
It took a while, but I finally convinced her. I graduated with my bachelors in geology and nine months after graduation, I was hired at the environmental lab I'm still with now. Are there times I think "damn, I wish I made more so I could afford that?" Yeah, there are, but I'm okay with not having all kinds of extras because I actually like my job and I enjoy what I'm doing. My mom sees that now and she's okay with it. She actually thinks that things worked out better for me this way.
Hang in there and don't lose sight of the dream you have for yourself. Even if it takes you a while to get there, it's going to be worth it in the end.
