Dera's first meeting with Ziva was indeed a rough one. The whole work mode thing promptly set her in a position that is held at a much further distance than any others. She was aggressive and butting into what he saw as mafia business and making a great show of trying to assert her authority over him when he didn't know who the fuck she was and--! Y-yeah, he just really hated it all. DID NOT LIKE HER IN THE LEAST.
The mistletoe conversation didn't help either. He just got REALLY OFFENDED as I recall. 8( He hated the idea that he was being compared to her brother like that. She doesn't know him well enough to make a comparison like that as far as he's concerned. And, given what she did tell him about Ari, he didn't think the comparison could be anything good at all. He definitely doesn't see himself in the same light, even if he can admit there are similarities there.
Also~ The way she caught onto the whole issue with his parentage -- that really, really set him on edge for quite a while. That information is something he's never shared with anyone, and for him to be careless enough to let someone figure it out like that just threw him way off balance. The way he was raised emphasized the need for keeping that secret like nothing else. (His father publically announcing him as the child of Bianchi's mother, his parentage being kept a secret from even him for so many years, the general opinion on illegitimate children among the mafia, etc). It's a very serious issue for him and one that he fully believes makes him worth less as a person, someone deserving of poor treatment. That's just The Way Things Are in his mind. And that's added on top of the expectation that people will distrust him just because, so. 8( YOU GET THE IDEA.
BUT THEN SHE GAVE HIM THE MANUAL. And. He was sort've really, really floored. A lot. It was totally the opposite sort of thing he expected to happen, and once he was able to step away and actually think about it he was really suspicious of it for a while. Gift from some bitch who found out his GIANT SECRET? CLEARLY THERE HAD TO BE TRICKERY AFOOT. But then he thought about it more and decided it must be due to the brother comparison she'd been making before and . . . he really couldn't find anything in that to point towards her being a threat to him any longer. And it's that point that he really softened a bit towards her.
And yeah, it also helped a lot that it was a manual on bombs when their first meeting involved her bitching him out and abusing him for trying to plan out some bomb use. :| That also earned her points! It pinged as an attempt at apology, and it was a badass book anyway. HE LOVES THAT BOOK. So he figured if she was going to make that kind of gesture, he could try to tolerate her a little.
He still does hold her at a distance as best he can, and to a degree he always will. She's law enforcement, and not the sort that can be bribed. :| ALAS, WE CANNOT BE etcetc. more talking about a divide between famiglia and friends/aquaintances here. But all that aside Ziva is one of the few older people he doesn't entirely dislike and can stand to be around without getting suspicious of her actions within five minutes. Which is saying a lot considering this is Gokudera. :|b
