Musicals

*smiles* So... I'm pretty sure this cripples me with the double geek tag, but that's all right. Spending my Saturday night playing a computer game with last_bastion while we listen to Rent and Jesus Christ Superstar on occasion is a fantastic way to invest my time. Never mind the fact that we listened to Dracule the musical while we were running around town today.

*smiles* Yes... I know... there's no rhyme or reason to that combo. But there you go.

On the other hand, all of the musical imput got me thinking about what I like and what I don't like about musicals... and most of it comes down to lyrics. Take poor Dracula for example. After listening to it in the car, I'm pretty sure its not one I'd ever think about seeing. The music had an interesting tonal quality to it... but the lyrics were horribly lacking and/or completely not engaging. Rent, on the other hand, I can listen to over and over and over again. And it comes down to lines like these...

The heart may freeze... or it may burn... the pain will ease... if I can learn... there is no future... there is not past... I live each moment as my last.

Or...

What was it about that night? Connection in an isolating age! For once the shadows turned into light... for once I didn't disengage.

Never mind the complexity of how the voices layered over each other. All very pleasing to the ear. Well... my ear. *smiles*

Jesus Christ Superstar is a movie that I'm mildly sad I waited so long before falling head over heels for it. The title was kinda off-putting, and I'm not sure why... but when last_bastion finally got me to sit down and watch it, I seriously found myself engaged in it. I blame they guy that played Judas... and I also blame this scene. If I liked it before hand, this scene sealed my love of it.

Never let it be said that the 70s can't be sexy still... in that scary kind of retro way.

All right... done now. Back to whatever you were doing before you fell half way into my thought process.

Raen.
