On the TV...

So, last_bastion and I have been on a TV on DVD watching kick the last few nights. He bought Sons of Anarchy, season 1, the last weekend based on the very good reviews we've heard of it.

Oh... my gods. Do I love this series. And for so many reasons.

Katey Sagal's Gemma(sp), for one. You know, her Peg Bundy made my Dad laugh a lot. She absolutely shines as the aging MC club queen, though... manipulative and at the same time very vulnerable. Yay for her. In the end, it won't be Peg I'll be remembering her for... it'll be things like the skateboard to the face of the 'sweet tart' that slept with her old man and her stepping into the ATF agent's face to tell said agent to 'unscrew that dick' and try being one of the girls.

The writing in general is fantastic. Sure, there's the overarching story, which is entertaining, but what really makes the story great is watching all of the relationships. They're complex... I would say very realistic as well. Particularly the ones on the periphary... the ones that most shows wouldn't give that much attention to. The moments of humanity you see between characters that are capable of being completely inhuman are so very touching... particularly between Ron Perlman's character (Clay) and Sagal's (Gemma). There really aren't _that_ many flat characters in this show. They all have personalities.

So much of the acting is done with that beautifully light touch... it keeps impressing me while at the same time surprising me. 'Course, the caliber of some of the actors involved really helps with that.

More than anything else, the above are the things that I _really_ love about the show.

Which brings me round to dialogue...

*smiles* I love a well strung series of words. Memorable quotes will stick with me for a long time, and this show is full of them. Never mind the fact that the dialogue always sounds distinctly like the character delivering it... something that doesn't always happen in TV as a series progresses.

So... there you go. Season 1, Sons of Anarchy, so very worth the watch.

Raen.
