Cabin... woods... spectacular mountain views... hiking... mountain flowers... cold mountain run off for water...

Going to visit formal_copy and smittymoo comes with some of this attached. They are indeed in the middle of nowhere, which feels lovely after being trapped in the crush of an urban environment all of the time. *smiles* While I can appreciate my friends who have adapted well to the urban lifestyle, and urban shaman I am not. I hear God most clearly when I'm standing surrounded by nothing the Voices of the Earth Mother and Sky Father. I am most appreciatively at home where things come closer and closer to being wild.

So... this weekend we spent in a cabin a significant way up the side of a foothill. Elevation wise, half way up the winding road of cliff hugging curves and switch backs, I recall seeing a sign that read 7800 ft. elevation. It was no Pike's Peak, mind you... but it was a signifcant way up there. The cabin itself is simple... one room with a loft above, basic electric strung up from the city below, and a simple system that runs water. It wasn't roughing it, but it didn't really have heat, either. And no insulation.

We sat out in the sun, hiked up to mineral beds and picked through them ourselves, and cooked a lot of food. I took a book of Colorado flowers around and reminded myself that I want to learn how to identify medicinal plants on the mountainside, pulled out a sketch book to draw the plants and rocks and things.... and just absorbed the world around me. I had humming birds fly up to me, hovering inches from my face and imperiously demand that they be fed humming bird food, and I got to watch a string of wild turkeys cross the road.

Much like listening to the constant thrumming roar of the ocean, I could listen to the wounds of a mountain brook all day and never be bored.

All in all, a good weekend.

Just need a few more days to enjoy it next time, rather than just a weekend. *smiles*

It reminded me a lot of going to the beach when I was a kid.

Now... I'm dirty, and I'm tired, and I'm looking forward to a shower after the soup and salad that I'm getting from Outback. Tomorrow, its back on the diet.

Raen.

nature, friends
