Where in Japan you planning on going? Tokyo area? Do you plan on going to other places? Osaka/Hokkaido/Kyoto etc? If you do, are you getting a Foreigners JR Pass? Hotel or staying with someone you know? Budget? What kind of stuff do you want to see?
For the most part you can get around Tokyo etc without knowing JP. Finding specific shops and stuff will be a little difficult though if they aren't major stores or in major areas. In general things aren't hard to find though as there are usually major areas/streets that you'll just walk around and see things.
I'm not a touristy person, so I can't really tell you about "things to see". But in general, three major places.
Shibuya and Shinjuku for clothes and general trendy shopping and stuff. Harajuku for more affordable but underground shopping(unless you go to the rich area). Akiba for electronics and games. All are super easy to get to. They speak decent english at the train station so just ask a destination they'll tell you the line. Find the area of the station that has that line, look at map, find price, and it's cake from there.
There's a lot of specialty areas, like Ocharomizu has a bunch of musical instrument shops and the like.
Strangely I've never been to Tokyo, as I've found no reason to. Shopping is better in Shinjuku/Shibuya supposedly, so most people that go to Tokyo just go to "see Tokyo". Most of the major clubs/halls for concerts and what not are also better in Shinjuku and Shibuya as well. So yeah, what do you want to see/are interested in, and I'll be able to get/give more info.
