Summary: Zoe heads over to Lavon's for some much needed reassurance. Aka, how the shenanigans of The Curling Iron could've been cut in half.
Hey all. I've basically forgotten how to post on here. That's how long it has been. Be gentle with this one. It's been over 2 years since I've written anything. In my defense I am planning this long, sweeping, story that'll be posted probably two years from now becuase I'm awful.
There’s a test sitting on the edge of her sink.
Two in the garbage.
They’re all saying the same thing and the four that are still in their boxes will say the same as well.
Positive.
She’s pregnant.
With Wade’s baby.
She doesn’t know if she wants to throw up or laugh because what a cliché she is right now. Unwed and knocked up in rural Alabama.
She takes two more pregnancy tests (both positive- surprise, surprise), tosses the remaining two under in her bathroom vanity, and crawls into bed.
She tosses and turns, stares at the ceiling and at the door and turns her head to stare out the window towards Wade’s house, where she can just barely make out the glow of his living room lights, until her neck hurts before she gives up, puts on her shoes and makes her way towards Lavon’s.
(She doesn’t look at Wade’s house at all.)
He’s still up and watching football highlights (of course) and the moment he sees her in her pajamas and slippers he knows something is wrong (of course).
She doesn’t cry during the explanation but the way Lavon sits there with wide eyes kind of makes her want to.
“You have to say something.”
He starts to form a word but gives up. Then tries again and ends up shaking his head.
“Oh my god.” She drops her head into her hands and sways back on the couch. “What the hell am I going to do? You’re completely unresponsive and it’s not even your baby and you’re a hundred times better adjusted than Wade. How is he going to react?”
Lavon puts one finger up and she really thinks she’s going to get some good advice this time but he curls it back into his fist and rests his chin on it.
“Lavon!” She explodes off the couch and he follows.
“Don’t get upset….it’s not good for the baby. I’m trying to process all of this.”
“What is there to process? I’m pregnant, it’s Wade’s baby, now tell me what to do.”
“Well you have to start by calming down.” He puts his hands on her shoulders and gently lowers her to the cushion and she takes a deep breath and closes her eyes. She can calm down. Baby steps. No pun intended. “Then you have to tell Wade.”
Her eyes fly open and she’s back off the couch. “Are you crazy?”
“Well you have to tell him sometime. He’s not stupid.”
“I know that.”
“And he has to be involved.”
“I don’t need anything from him. I’m not expecting anything.”
Lavon tilts her head and his eyes go soft. “You know that’s not how this is going to work. Geographically speaking, anyways. He lives right next door. You can’t raise this baby having it only know Wade as ‘next door neighbor Wade.’ Sometimes he fixes things around here, things are awkward between him and my mom and hey, I kind of have his eyes.”
She sits back down with a heavy sigh and Lavon joins her.
“And you know he’ll want to be involved. He is in love with you. He’ll love this baby.”
“I’m going to change his whole life.”
“Yeah, but he wouldn’t want this with anyone else. Do you?”
No. She loves him. She shakes her head.
“I’m not saying it’s going to be easy. Especially not at first. Do you think you can get a video of you telling him? I want to see the look on his face.”
She smiles for the first time since she took that first test. “I’ll see what I can do.”
“It’s going to work out. It has to.” He claps his hands together, suddenly hit with the joy of the situation that Zoe is still trying to grasp. “My two best friends in love and having a baby.”
“It must be nice to be that optimistic.”
“Come on.” He elbows her gently. “Just imagine it. I’m gonna be an uncle.”
“Probably a godfather.”
“That’s even better. I’m going to teach him how to play football….”
“What if it’s a girl?”
“Girls can play football too. And run a town and cook amazing gumbo.”
“I hope this means you can babysit when we need you to.”
“Of course.”
In the morning she’ll have to tell Wade and she knows that they’ll be okay. Maybe not at first but they’ll get there.
But right now she settles into the cushions with her hand over her belly and listens to Lavon ramble on about his plans for his goddaughter or godson.
She doesn't want it any other way.
