Zoe wakes up with the back of Wade’s hand pressed to her forehead.
“What are you doing?”
“You’re hot.”
She shakes his hands away and he rolls his eyes. “I meant you feel warm. You feeling alright?”
“I feel fine.” She sits up and tries to ignore how dizzy she suddenly feels and how foggy everything looks. “I’m fine.”
His palms glide over her shoulders as he gently lowers her back onto the bed.
“Obviously you’re not. You’re staying home today.”
He’s off the bed and reaching for his phone without giving her any room for debate.
“What are you doing?” She reaches for him but he moves to the end of the bed and she doesn’t have the energy to follow him.
“I’m calling Brick.”
“Why would you do that?”
“Because you’re not going to.”
“Wade, stop.” She tries to kick him but he easily evades that too.
“Wade, you are not my mother so you don’t get to call me out sick for school. I need to go to work; I need to see my patients.”
“Brick is there, he’ll take care of them.”
“That is exactly my point. He’ll be the only one there so any new patients that come in will go directly to him. I won’t even have a chance. I need to get my thirty percent.”
“Aren’t you two past that? I thought you were getting along or something.”
“We kind of are but he doesn’t need any more patients. I do. I don’t want to just hand him over a reason for him to be in the lead.”
“So now it’s a race?”
“Yes.”
“You can’t treat people when you’re sick.”
“I’ll get them sick and then I’ll treat them. It’s job security.”
“I hope you’re kidding.”
“I am. Mostly.”
He gives her a disapproving look and starts to dial.
“Wade.”
“Shhh.” He turns his back to her to avoid another kick. “Hey Brick, it’s Wade.”
She groans and falls back against the pillows.
“Yeah, I’m fine, everything’s fine really, but I don’t think Zoe is going to be able to come into work today…I think she’s sick…fever, pale, grumpy.” He laughs when she tries to kick him and grabs her foot before it can get him. “I’m calling because she would never call you about this…I know…she is stubborn.” He nods his head and she rips her foot away. “You’re so right…it’s impossible to get her to do something…uh huh…what you gotta do is make it seem like it’s her idea and then she’s all for it….yup, preaching to the choir, Brick.”
Zoe rolls her eyes and he waves his hand at her.
“I don’t know, let me ask her.” He pulls the phone away from his ear and covers it with his free hand. “Brick would like to know if you’re sick enough to need a doctor.”
“I am a doctor!” She shouts but her stuffy nose and sore throat make it sound a lot less threatening than she intends it to.
He’s smiling as he brings the phone back to his ear. “Well, she reacted just like you said she would.” He laughs again at something Brick says and she’s officially had enough and reaches under her head for the pillow which she flings at him. She misses it immediately but he doesn’t deflect it and it hits him in the chest so she decides that it’s worth it. “I have to go, Brick, I got a patient to take care of.”
She tries to throw another pillow but he’s expecting it this time and catches it. She pouts.
“Thanks, I’ll tell her.”
He ends the call, slides the phone back into his pocket and moves to her with the pillows.
“He says that he hopes you feel better.”
“Along with some other things.” She grumbles but sits up when he tries to reposition the pillows back beneath her head. “I don’t really like the two of you bonding over how awful I am.”
“No one thinks you’re awful.” He says quietly. “We were just joking around.”
“At my expense.”
“Aww.” He ducks his head and tries to kiss her but she moves her head away. “Hey.”
“Wouldn’t want you to get sick.”
“I think it’s safe to assume that I’ve got what you’ve got. I’ll take care of you and then you’ll take care of me. How ‘bout that?”
She relents and gives in. The kiss only lasts a moment because he’s pulling up the blanket to cover her shoulders and making sure that the pillow under her head is flipped and cool against her warm skin then lies down next to her.
“Thank you, Wade.” She says when he settles in.
He slides his arm over her waist and mumbles “Go to sleep” against her shoulder.
She falls asleep without putting up a fight.
