Chapter: 1/1
Song: Question- Old 97's
Word Count: 1,703
Summary: She didn't expect that two years after him saying 'let me tell you something, Zoe Hart, George Tucker and Lemon Breeland are getting married' he would be saying 'let me tell you something, Zoe Hart, I'm going to marry you' but that's where they are now.
A/N: Just a fluffy, little future fic because I desperately need good things to happen between these characters. Now.

She knows that the proposal is coming.
He’s been acting differently lately-nervous, pacing, his right hand constantly lingering around the right side front pocket of his jeans where the small, black box is constantly kept.

She already knows what the ring looks like. She found it by accident a few weeks ago while she was cleaning up his place.

He’s messy and even though she’s not a neat freak or anything there’s only so much she can take before she snaps. She attempted to get him to do it himself-she wasn’t asking for a complete turnaround or anything, just for him to pick up some of his clothes that he tossed on the ground and forgotten about-but he shook his head, kissed her softly, and said ‘organized chaos, Doc. It ain’t messy, you just don’t know the system.’ She had let it go because this was his place and he was just as happy hanging out at hers across the pond. She was always the one that dragged him to his place because she liked it. She liked that it’s distinctively his place with all his things and his bed and even the clutter was oddly endearing.

But that day, the day she found the ring, the endearing quality of it all had diminished and she just had to do something. She wasn’t going to make the whole place over. She was only going to pick up a few things here and there, not enough for him to notice but enough for her to make her feel better.

She had gathered up an arm full of t-shirt and jeans and pulled open the second dresser drawer one handed, losing a few shirts on the way and heaved them in. She had to really jam them in there because the drawer was already overflowing and that’s when she found the ring…tucked into the front corner of the drawer. Her hands stopped moving and she stared for a split second before she was moving again, grabbing the box and flipping it open.

She gasped as soon as she saw it which was dumb because she knew what it was before she opened it, it’s not like it was a surprise or anything but still….it was a ring, definitely an engagement ring, and it was hidden from her in Wade’s things.

Then she closed the box and took a deep breath because she was getting ahead of herself. Just because it was an engagement ring that he had didn’t mean that it was for her. Maybe it was his mother’s ring-one that was passed down to him from his father when his mother passed away. Maybe he keeps in the drawer because he doesn’t like to talk about it. Out of sight, out of mind. Or maybe it was Tansy’s. That thought made her drop the box back in the drawer and close it. She doesn’t like to think about that. She knows that Wade and Tansy were only really married on paper and not in real life but that doesn’t mean she didn’t get a ring. Maybe when the drunken fire burned out she gave it back to him and he’s been holding on to it.

But just maybe it was an engagement ring meant for her.

She meant to leave it alone and let it play itself out. If it was for her he’d tell her when the time was right and if it wasn’t then she’d forget about it.

But her curiosity got the best of her later that night when he got home.

“Do you notice anything different in here?” She was sitting on his couch with her feet up on the table in front of her with a magazine resting against her legs.

He was at the fridge pulling out a beer and he popped his head up to look around. “No. Why? What did you do?”

“I cleaned up.”

“Zoe.”

“You didn’t even notice.”

“Still.”

She heard his footsteps get closer.

“I just picked up some shirts. Shoved them in the dresser. Second drawer.”

He paused and even though she couldn’t see him she’d bet anything he was looking back towards the dresser.

“It’s hard to open now.”

“Oh really?”

“Yeah.” She craned her neck around to see him. He was looking at her.

“Well now you know another reason why I don’t clean up. Nowhere to put anything.” He smiled and shrugged as he sat down next to her and draped his arm across the back of the couch, relaxed and composed.

Maybe the ring was nothing and as she tried to talk herself out of feeling disappointed as she was lying next to him in bed pretending to be asleep she felt him shift next to her and get out of bed. Her eyes remained closed until she heard the dresser drawer open and she barely opened them. In the dim light she saw him slowly and silently moving the black box from the second drawer to the first one then shake his head and bend down to tuck the box into the pocket of his jeans.

She smiled before he turned around because he wouldn’t have hid it if it wasn’t for her. He was planning on asking her to marry him one day and as he climbed back into bed she curled into him, her smile still present against his shoulder.

Now he’s just waiting for the right time to ask her and she wishes that he would just do it because his nerves are making her nervous and she’s really ready to say yes to him. Every day he doesn’t do it makes her more and more anxious because she starts to think that he’s changed his mind and decided to not ask her. She hopes that he’s not worried about if she’s going to say yes or not. There’s no doubt in her mind that she’ll accept. She’s known that for awhile now. Probably ever since they finally got together two years ago.

Two years ago her year in Bluebell was up. She was ready for that fellowship in New York City. George and Lemon worked things out and got married. There was no reason for her to stay so he had nothing to lose and as he and Lavon walked her through the airport he pulled her aside and spelled it out for her without any interruption. Of course she already knew. Lavon had told her and she was prepared for him to say something but that didn’t mean she was prepared to hear it. So she told him that she was sorry and that she had to go. She tried to hug him but he didn’t make any move to hug back.

New York wasn’t how she remembered it and after a few months she began to wonder why she had spent all that time missing it. The fellowship used to be all that she wanted but more and more each day she started to realize that what she really wanted was a small, Alabama town with an ex football player as the mayor and a neighbor that drove her crazy but is crazy about her.

Lavon must have told Wade that she was coming back-she wanted it to be a surprise-because he was standing there waiting to pick her up at the airport.

They didn’t say anything as she got closer to him and it wasn’t until she was standing directly in front of him that he moved. He took the carry on off her shoulder and dropped it to the ground then pulled her closer to him wrapping his arms around her back. She rested her forehead against his chest and breathed in for the first time in months.

They haven’t really let go of each other since that night.

And now she’s waiting on him to ask her a question that will change their lives.

She’s trying to relax and show patience and not let on that she knows what he’s going to do because he deserves to ask her and have it be a surprise. When he finally does ask her she plans to put on a shocked face and maybe get some tears going and she’ll let him say whatever he wants to say to her and then she’ll say yes.

But just like most of the plans in her life it doesn’t go the way she told herself that it would.

They’re getting ready to go out for dinner, she’s got a dress on and he’s in jeans and a t-shirt; casual but still looking good, and she’s thinking that tonight will be the night that he will ask her. They’re going to a restaurant that she’s never heard of and when she asked him why they were going there and not some place more local he got that nervous look in his eye and his hand moved to the pocket of his jeans while he explained lamely that he just wanted to try something new. She saw right through it but went along with it for his sake.

They’re walking out the door, Zoe walking a few steps ahead of him, when she feels him take a hold of her elbow and pull her around to face him.

He takes the box out of his pocket and before he can even get it open or she can look shocked or start to cry she’s nodding.

“Yes.”

“What….I didn’t even…”

“I know.” She laughs and holds his empty hand. “I know but I just want to say yes.”

“Really?” He’s smiling and flipping open the box with his thumb.

“Yes.” She shakes her left hand a little, waiting impatiently for the ring.

“You didn’t even let me ask. I didn’t even get down on one knee. I had a plan.” He says but he’s got that wide smile on his face to let her know he’s not mad.

She apologizes anyways. “I’m sorry.” Her hand slides up to his shoulder. “Do you want to? You can do whatever you want.”

“Well what’s the point now? I already got you. Who cares about being romantic?”

“What a great way to start the next chapter of our lives.” She says sarcastically.

“Yeah, yeah.” He mumbles and the ring slides onto her left just as his lips move across hers.
