The rain had turned to mist in the early afternoon. Hisoka looked out the window again, eyes drawn to the trail of a water droplet as it made its winding way down the lettering on the cafe's name.

With unnecessary clatter, Tsuzuki resumed his earlier seat and dove into his cake as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. Hisoka looked at his partner out of the corner of his eye and found violet eyes looking back at him. Despite the rate at which Tsuzuki was inhaling his sugary treat, he was paying it less than his full attention.

"Everything settled?" Hisoka asked dryly. Tsuzuki grinned at him innocently as the waitress came to their table with a third piece of cake. Taking that as his answer, Hisoka turned from the window to the third person at their table.

Her hair drawn back in pigtails, the little girl gazed curiously at the dessert. Their was a heart-rending amount of awe and fear in her over such a simple treat, and Hisoka found himself reaching out to slide the plate a little closer to her in invitation. It was all the prompting she needed. With one small, dirty hand, she picked up the slice of cake and brought it to her mouth.

Without meaning to, Hisoka found himself looking at her dirty, blunt nails. The tips of her fingers were rough and scraped; her thumb nail looked chewed down to the point of bleeding. The state of her hands didn't seem to bother her, though. With fast bites, she devoured her treat, barely taking time to chew.

When she was done, Tsuzuki put a glass of juice near to her hand. The action brought Hisoka's focus back to his partner and as their eyes met he felt a frisson of awareness along his skin. Hisoka seldom took the opportunity to simply -be- in moments. His life before had held few of them, and the first few months after life, they had been moving from one assignment to the next. Even as they sat there, duty called. Their guest needed them to find her killer and to set things to right.

But avenging her wasn't nearly as important as fulfilling her last request. There would be time for reparation later. With a half-smile of his own, Hisoka pushed his plate toward the girl and raised his hand to flag down their waitress for seconds.
