MTV

This will be an ironic post given my reputation, but in my defense let's just say this. If you were doing an hour of cardio and there was a TV per machine in your gym always on just staring you in the face, you'd watch it too, wouldn't you? And I can only watch Fashion TV for so long before I start to suspect that even MTV must destroy my brain less. After I added the sound I'm not so sure about the brain part though.

Anyway, the point of this post is that after watching an hour of MTV, I kind of felt that the quality of the videos was a lot higher than I had expected. I'm going to do a little review of all of videos that I saw that were interesting. (This isn't by order of favorites, just the order that I managed to remember them).

First, "Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis. YouTube won't let me embed, so here's the link. What I like about the video is the set. I really like watching all of the different people with their own stories intertwining throughout the apartment building. Plus, I actually do like the song. Finally, I think there's a lot of feeling in all of the actors and stories. There's something about this video that really connects with me.

Second, "Tired of Being Sorry" by Enrique Iglesias.

The thing is, I have to admit that I actually like Enrique. What can I say? I think he has a gorgeous voice, and he's an excellent songwriter. His stuff may be simplistic, or pop-y, but it's also catchy and melodic. Plus he's incredibly hot, so there's just no resisting. There was another video of his going about on MTV earlier, and that song and video did nothing for me, but this one is fantastic. I just love the whole vampire/supernatural them, and the was this is implied by the aesthetics fuses together really nicely.

Third, "Clumsy" by Fergie. This one also won't embed, so here's the link. Let me begin by saying that I don't really like the song, and I have this general distaste for her which I can't explain because I can't think of anything of hers that I actually know. That said, I think that the video is brilliant. It's so creative! From the moment the first pop-up page opened, I was blown away by what a great idea it was. Then there's the execution. I'm no graphics maven, but to me the whole thing was done seamlessly. This one really impressed me.

Fourth, "Chasing Pavements" by Adele. Here's the link. I'll admit that I've heard this song a lot on the radio recently, and I've always found it to be rather annoying. Maybe it's that the hook is too hooky or over-repeated or whatever, but after hearing it once I feel like I've heard it enough to last the rest of my life. Nevertheless, after seeing the video I'm horribly tempted to buy her stuff just to support her. Have you noticed that she is the only person on MTV who is not thin? She hides her body through the whole film, but she obviously has a distinguished face, and I have enormous respect for an artist who penetrates the visual market without selling her sex. All this about music and politics aside, the video is absolutely fantastic. Like the other videos I've listed, it has a fresh new idea, but it further has terrific dancing, so of course I'm utterly won over. The whole idea of doing the dance lying down on the sidewalk is gorgeously modern, and the last cut where the characters interact with the standing figures via their shadows is genius. Okay, that's all for criticism today.
